Maynard the Magician!

When my youngest daughter, Melissa, wanted to join the Mission High School band, the band director gave her a huge drum. On the way out to the drill field, she dropped it and it rolled out the door and down the sidewalk!

So, instead of giving her a base drum, he decided to give her the school’s mascot costume. So for the rest of her high school career, she would don the Eagle suit. This was a full-body suit and a paper mache head of an Eagle! She said early in the football season the costume got a little hot, but it was fun.

She would get phone calls from local children asking to speak to the Eagle. She would tell them the Eagle was taking a shower at the moment and could not come to the phone.

Since Mission High School population had a high percentage of farm kids as students and there was a Future Farmers Association club on campus. Part of this program was to raise a hog or calf and then in the fall at a local fair, show off the animal. The top two or three winners would earn awards to help pay for their college tuition. High School kids learned a lot about animal care and management.

Melissa joined the Mission FFA and raised a hog she named Maynard. Well, all these animals were kept in pens on the high school campus. I suppose that Maynard got bored so with his nose opened the latch on his pen, then went around and opened other latches of several other animals. This happened at the same time as the high school baseball team was playing a ball game. The game had to be suspended while the various students ran to catch their wandering stock and return them to their assigned pens.

After the semester was over, these animals were all in competition at the county-wide fair and then auctioned off. It was a sobering and somewhat sad event because most, if not all these animals would be going to meat packing companies. But it was a lesson to be learned by all the future farmers. The funds received for the animal would first pay for their food and care, and the rest would be used for the students’ college expenses. Just Sayin…RJS

Good story RJS, sure hope Maynard had his life spared. Smart as the pig in Charlotte’s Web!
