Fishing in sequoia national park

Hi everyone, as the tile says I’m going to be fishing in sequoia national park. I haven’t been able to find on the internet a lot good fishing spots and stuff like that. I’m wondering if anyone could give me some locations where they have caught trout like lakes and streams and that kind of stuff. I also have questions about the tackle I’m using and whether or not it’s good to catch trout. I have power bait, salmon eggs, lures, and fake worms, will this be sufficient? I’m also curious how to set up the rigs with piwerbait and worms and also the salmon eggs, I have only fished using jigs and lures in the past. Sorry about all the questions, and thank you.

You should be good on the salmon eggs. What lures are you using.

I picked up this trout lure at Walmart today. In terms of the salmon eggs, do I putt them on a hook with a weight and let them sit in the bottom? Or what do I do?

Alright get you some salmon egg hooks and a small bobber put one egg on the hook and place the bobber 8 or so inches above the hook and just let that bad boy drift with the current into spots where there are trout. Also get your self some rooster tails 1/8 oz try to mimic trout colors with those. Unless you’re fishing in a lake you really shouldn’t need weights but have them on hand just in case. Also balls of Fire in my opinion are the best salmon eggs to use. There’s also this lure called jakes lures it looks like a money clip. It’s probably the best trout lure I’ve ever used. Have you ever fished streams for trout?

No I usually fish on boats in the ocean so never for trout. I have never fished freshwater before. I understand how to use the salmon eggs for the streams now thank you, would I do the same thing for a lake?

You know I have never really had much luck using bait when fishing for trout in lakes so I can’t really help you on that one. But stream fishing I do know about. Just remember trout are finicky and will spook super easy. They also almost always face upstream so do your best to approach from down stream cast well ahead of the holes and eddies you’re trying to target. Also if it’s a fast moving stream lures like spoons and spinners don’t really work great fishing them with the current so try to cast down stream and retrieve against the current. Be mindful that if you can see the fish they can see you. But most importantly have a good time don’t be afraid to travel a lot to find that perfect spot.

I fish for trout in fast rivers in the east. Salmon eggs work well . Simple spoons work well like kastmaster, and rooster tails. Poisson_de_Sable gave you some good advice. Trout are easily spooked. Other advice, 1/16 an 1/8 ounce and maybe up to a 1/4 ounce lure. Small #10 hooks. There is a special hook for salmon eggs. I usually replace the treble hooks on my spinners with a single hook. It’s less likely to get snagged and usually easier to free up when it does. Trout also have a very light bite so I prefer to fish with 4lb fluorocarbon line on a 1000 series reel with a fast ultralight rod in the 5.5 to 6 foot range. If money is an object Cabela’s sells their brand FishEagle that is 5’ 6” ultralight. Often on sale for 60 bucks or so. Sometimes less. Save the Berkley trout nuggets for stocked fish. Have fun fishing.

Fished a lot in Sequoia Park born and raised in Lindsay. Which is a small town about 30 miles south of the park. As far as fishing spots you can go up highway 180 thru the town of Three Rivers stop at Potwisha camp ground then go to hospital rock an old Indian site. Make your way to the river, the middle fork of the Kaweah River. You can fish going down the river but you must walk back to your car.
Go through the park to Kings Canyon National Park there are two lakes Sequoia Lake and Hume Lake both are stocked with trout.
The baits that you have will work in the Kaweah River as well as the lakes.
Good luck,
Ken
