I guess we are going to die of something, so eating fresh water fish may be the least of the worst evils in our day.

In NJ we have arsenic naturally occurring in most of our lakes. Mercury is a problem in many lakes in South and MidWest. Studies say mercury consumption even in small amounts is a leading cause of Parkinson’s disease. I eat limited fish out of the ocean and nothing out of lakes. True we have to die from something but for me it won’t be arsenic poisoning!

Are the fish in northern Ontario and Manitoba relatively safe to eat?

I don’t know… but I was once told all freshwater lakes have mercury from airborne contaminants

Here we have it from the gold rush. That’s why I fish drinking water reservoirs

Yes. Our mercury poisoning is of our own demise. It started with our industrial revolution and iron production
Don't blame our forefathers they didn't know what problems ii would cause generations later. Hopefully we can overcome greed now that we know the ill effects.

I understand the airborne Mercury factor is worldwide, but without the heavy industry and farm land runoff of chemicals, just how less polluted can the lakes be approximately 300 miles north of Winnipeg?

We get it airborne because of burning coal!!!

Airborne is world wide, not the point. Point is, that without the chemical runoff, those northern areas should be far less polluted.
