Why is it that Army vets are so wise?

The stateside army spends a lot of time teaching us to slack off and hide, if we don't have a specific job to do. When we come home and still have service time, we have a lot of slack time. I disappeared to one of the lakes on base. If I stayed around the company area, I was sure to get some detail or another. I figured staying on base constituted "sticking around". I believed then and still do, that the out of sight out of mind concept was encouraged.

Hard workers usually get their work done sooner than others, so sometimes find a place to kind of hide.

It's the Corporate American way... ride on the back of your horses (hard workers) to maximize profits

Makes sense. When I came back from Viet Nam, I was attached to a STRAC unit. We had to be ready in 48 hours to deploy. We were actually loaded up on aircraft one time for a trip to Israel, but they ended the war before we took off. At any rate, being that kind of unit, we had the men to operate a bunch of hueys and no place to fly them. That led to a lot of dead time. If you stuck around after morning report, You would find yourself policing a field that had been picked up an hour before and unused, or painting a fence that had been painted two weeks earlier. You get the picture. The brass did not want anyone just loitering about. It looked bad. I feel we paid our dues, working long hours every day. then trying to sleep through 175 artillery fire about 100 yards away with one eye open all night, just waiting for the siren or an orderly coming to tell you to grab your gear and head for the chopper. It was just the way it was, and probably still is.

Totally agree! Raised my son that way, maybe a little too well. Encouraged him to get an afterschool part time job to keep him further occupied. He ends up spending his $$ on lures and the latest Shimano/Daiwa offerings.
