Good morning Doug and all to follow, raining here now at 47* but getting progressively cooler as the day passes. A good day to paint the basement ceiling tiles after my plumbing debacle, about 6 tiles have water stains and the style is no longer in production. Going to hit them with Kilz and then ceiling white and hope they’ll match the others and please the misses, too expensive to do a total replacement and heck, it’s only a rec room in the basement. Hope everyone has a great day.

Good luck with your project Brad. I waited over a week for a company that was going to give an estimate to redo my basement. I called before they was to show up here. Then the guy said my estimate will be higher than your insurance will want to cover. He could have told me that when I called. Wasted 10 days. Another is coming this afternoon. He's worked with my adjuster before. Y'all have a good day 👍

Yeah, I catch your drift Grizz. My plumber’s bill was quite a bit over his estimate, guess that’s why they call it an estimate.

Funny how they have the experience but usually miss by a mile 👍. May have my basement back by tax day. Still better off than alot in California. I've experienced 4 1/2 ' of water in the house. No fun at all. The pipe that busted was to outside faucet. Pipe capped off now well insulated n faucet removed n hole sealed. 👍

Estimates are an interesting subject.. many give the ones like you got.. Far short of the final bill.
I tend to go just the opposite way. I try to cover all possible aspects and bid high. The customer usually has a bit of 'sticker shock but in the end, usually gets a final bill less than the estimate. I've found that when customers have to scratch for funds, they are much more appreciative when they're still holding some green when we part!

Everyone in the repair business has their own way of doing business and I think it comes from who they learn the trade from. What worked for another may look lucrative or ridiculous.

My way of estimates was similar to Dougs. Figured everything on the high side to cover increases or elsewhere purchases. Also figure on the low end because sometimes bulk is cheaper, sales, or even a different supplier.

Therefore every job no matter the size i would give a range prize estimate. It gave wiggle room for changes and guaranteed not to exceed the top end.

What works for one doesn't always work for another so read the fine print and keep an eye on the project at hand.
