After the war, Doc Armstrong joined the Texas Highway Patrol as an officer. He was assigned to work in Abilene, in West Texas.
Doc had a lot of interesting experiences. The local office of the Highway Patrol was in the county courthouse in the town of Abilene. His boss told him to go down to the hospital and take a statement from some folks who had been in a car wreck.
Now, Doc’s patrol car was brand new and had not had its radio installed.
He drives to the hospital, parks, and goes in and takes the statement from the folks who had the accident. When finished, he drives back to the office. When he gets there, the short-wave radio in alive with a report that a new ford vehicle had just been stolen at the hospital!
He realizes that he had taken the wrong car, that the key he had also worked in another new Ford. He quickly drives back to the hospital and returns the purloined Ford. The owners are thankful and were amazed that the Highway Patrol had been so quick to find and return their car. Doc just says, “Well, we do the best we can.”
Then he goes and gets into his patrol car and goes back to the office.
In another incident, Doc had pulled a driver over and they had stopped on an overpass. When Doc tried to arrest the other driver, he began to put up a fight. In the tussle, they roll back down the hill together. Doc said he lost his handgun in the struggle and only was able to get the culprit under control finally, before he could search for his pistol.
He said after that, he decided he needed to get a different job that did not require fighting. Just Sayin…RJS
I never liked fighting either.
Quick thinking on the returned car. A little stretch of the truth went well for all involved.
But that tussle down the hill sure could have gone wrong.
