A Casita Can get you Fired!

I suppose the temptation was simply too great! For the pharmaceutical salesmen who were assigned to work in Laredo. they would assemble and have drinks in one of the popular watering holes in Nuevo Laredo after work. Somehow perhaps it was on a dare, or the temptation was too big.

Later, I spoke to some U.S. Air Force pilots who had trained at the Laredo AFB when it was open. They said they had the same problem. It is difficult to say no when you have had several margaritas and a sweet young thing hanging on your arm.

I have not doubted that temptation was always present, and there would be plenty of female temptations around in any Nuevo Laredo cantina. So, one or another of these salesmen would succumb to the temptation of having a full-time concubine in their own apartment.

It was a simple trick to create fake motel receipts and then spend that money on an apartment for your Conchita or Yolanda~!

While this was not any different than before, the companies who had hired these salesmen saw things differently.

If a salesman falsified his expense report, that was an offense that could bring termination. Also, having falsified their expense reports wasn’t the only ‘no, no’ since they were spending this same money and keeping a prostitute at their shared Casita, it was simply too much and was contrary to most companies’ rules. It was obviously assumed the salesmen were not spending their time doing their jobs. Remember the old saw about stocking two cabinets with groceries?

I got a strange call from my district manager. He told me to come to Corpus Christi and meet him at a motel there. When I arrived, not only was the district manager there but also the regional manager! They quickly assured me I wasn’t involved or a party to the Casita bunch in Laredo but wanted to fill me in before this news got out about what had happened.

All the salesmen who had been involved, and there were probably four or five, representing several different companies who were terminated. I was to cover Laredo as part of my job, going forward. This was or appeared to be a blessing in disguise because the product mix for the Laredo area was ideal to complement what I had in the Valley. While there was a much larger doctor count and required more planning to cover this addition, it would have been easy to accomplish.

Most of the medical doctors in Laredo were Mexican Americans and took siestas every day from about 12:00 unit 3:00, they then would work from around 3:00 until 7:00 or 8:00 in the evening. That would allow me to have a much higher doctor-call ratio by calling on them later in the evening. Since I was only there to call on physicians and create new business, it appeared to be a bonanza for me.

With my present territory I often found myself looking for more doctors to call upon, and not finding any, would simply go home. Now with Laredo, and much higher cross border traffic, It would have added perhaps as much as 30 to 40% more dollar volume.
I could keep working until at least 8:00.

This would allow me to capture and control a much higher volume of business. I suppose my managers also saw this and did not leave me with Laredo very long but hired another salesman to take on that part. I was disappointed but understood their reasoning.

As it was, I was producing above-average performance, and with Laredo I would have been very hard to beat. Just Sayin…RJS

With all that activity in Laredo I hope one of the drugs you sold was penicillin. Your company could have made a lot of money.

Penicillin was fine during WW II, but the newer drug was tetracycline, or Aureomyin or Acromycin (our brand names). More effective because they had a much broader spectrum against different organisms. Just Sayin...RJS

Yes, except for the side effects. The tetracycline family caused stained teeth in children. Later versions could cause a more rapid sunburn, and such. So we had to be careful and make sure the physicians knew the risk of taking these drugs. The benefits had to outweigh the possible problems. Just Sayin...RJS
