Our Kia Soul is overfull and we are going to Yellowstone for 2 weeks. 5wt work OK and leave the 3wt at home? Also have a 7wt Winston, but that might be to much rod? not much room left and the wife wants me to trim it up. so waders, fishpond pack with flies and 1 rod/reel. Thanks for the input!

5wt is perfect. Don't forget to bring non-felt boots and crimp your barbs. They are serious there.

Just got back from there. 5 weight worked fine. River north of Madison and Firehole are good spots :)

How about she stays home and you take as many rods as you feel like

Ditch the waders and bring an extra rod. It’s going to suck if you accidentally break the only rod you bring.

2nd the ditch your waders - just got back 2 weeks ago & was glad I left em. I'm a firm believer in a 4 at for trout but a 6 is better on the stone & in wind. 5 is a nice compromise

Bringing a 5 and a 7. Ditching the waders and boots would be helpful.

Maybe leave the wife and pack what you think you need.

I would never discount the value of having a wife along. Old jeans and tennis shoes are fine for wading, especially this time of year. It is some of the most beautiful water I have ever seen in my life Be prepared for lots of people and mass quantities of Rocky Mountain Dive Bombers(squitters) Daytime wets and nymphs early mornings and evenings watch for hatches, should be lots of mayflies and caddis this time of year. Hopper patterns also work well. Have fun, maybe get the wife into it a bit they are great fishing partners.

Take the 3 weight. It is great for the firehole and some of the small streams in the north. We lived in West Yellowstone for 7 years and I pretty much settled on a 4 wt for my river fishing, except in the fall when the big browns and rainbows come up out of Hebgen. Then I went with a 6. If you fish Lewis lake in the park or Henry's lake you might like having the 7 wt and a sinking line. Unless you have experienced wet wading cold water and like it, I would bring the waders. A pair of breathable boot foot (rubber soles) does not take a lot of room. Just clean them off with bleach if you fish water outside of the park. We don't need didymo (rock snot) or zebra mussels or other stuff in those pristine waters.

Are you still in Montana? I miss it a lot especially fishing season. Btw I'm from Livingston. Graywulff

Nope, and I miss it too. We are in WA state, about three miles from a slip on Puget Sound, so it's not too bad here, especially when I remember the days when it was 50 below, and as my son used to say, "we don't do 'wind chill' in Montana." We loved those burgers in that little stand in Livingston, the non-California In-n-Out Burger. Good memories. Oh, the Coastal cutthroats here in the salt don't replace those evenings on the madison, but they help.
Tight lines.
