I’m still kinda new to this group and new to salt water fishing. Living on the Gulf of Mexico in Pasco county, a little north of Tampa. I’ve been doing a lot of dock/pier fishing-throwing lots of lures and some bait fishing.
To get to my point, I’ve always been a fly fisherman in the mtns out west so I’m ready to try some of that on the beach. I haven’t seen anyone doing it. Anybody out there with any tips?

It can be a little challenging. If you use w floating line the surf has a way of catching the line and throwing it up on the beach. Hard to keep a fly in the strike zone. Had some success wading flats, just be sure you bring a stripping basket. I figure the best place to try is a jetty or pier.

As a guy who spent a lot of time surf fishing in Jersey…i dont know if a fly would get it done …some days a 4 oz pyramid sinker gets swept around…if your near the bay, that may work out better.

I would try Fred Howard Park around the bridges on the causeway I also am from port richey but fish offshore, my neighbors on the canal fish the flats inshore and said that cold spell we had shut that down might be coming back some saw a snook on my dock light last night. Good luck

Thanks for all the advice. It sounds like wading in the flats might be the best/easiest way to go about fly fishing. I honestly didn’t think about the waves pushing the line in shore. Good point and a stripping basket would be a good investment.
I’ll give the flats a try with the fly rod, and cast lures just behind the waves with a spinning reel. Thanks again!!

Try an intermediate sinking line with shrimp flies and clousers or deceivers. Poppers on a WF floating line would be fun. Fish the grass beds on the flats.
