I finally got ahold of a F&G agent. He told me that it is a law and doesn't have a clue what 'hook remover' can you use. So I asked that he send me a letter that I will not get a ticket for not having a ??? Did not get an answer.

Well the best hook remover I have found is a "Long Nosed" Vice Gripe Pliers. You can reach in and lock on the hook then get it out.

digger.... For unhooking small panfish and other smaller fish I catch on rod and reel to use as baits, I use a 10" set of locking surgical hemostats. Not as firm a grip as Vice Grips, but much easier to fit inside the fishes mouth.

Do any of y'all remember the old red hook disgorger? It was bout 7 or 8 inches long and had a small end and a larger end. They were tapered knobs that had a slot for the line and then the knobs had little fluted slots that the hook bend would go in and the barb and point would be covered.
They work great if you needed to get the hook out of a fish that had swallowed the hook in it's throat.
I still have one in my tackle box up in Tahoe I think.

Eagle Claw Tool Hook Remover. 6 3/4 inches long. I googled it.

Got those also. For small hooks they do real good. For bigger hooks and fish, the Vice Grips. Thought about buying the long Leg Hemostats but they wanted too much for them. Ok, sometimes I'm cheap but I prefer Frugal. ; )

I also have one of those red hook removers. I wish they used that kind of plastic on other stuff. Mine is still not brittle. I got it back in the 60's.

I don't use it, but I have it. Stainless needle nose works great from panfish to salmon, though I don't know if that would be legal in states requiring a hook remover.

I think the old red hook remover would qualify for the hook remover mentioned in the beginning of this post though.
