I go a new fishing rod and I just noticed it's slightly bent to the side.

Should I return it or is it normal? It's a jigging spinning rod for 80-130lb line, if that makes any difference.

a rod that heavy shouldn't have a curve. If you have a UV light check the rod blank, a defect will show up as a bright spot.

I'd take it back, that is something I look for, also look to see if the guides are straight.

On a factory-built rod, the guides are put where ever they land. A custom-built rod would have the guides opposite the spine. You will have very little accuracy while casting the rod. If you are not going to cast it, not a big problem, but I would take it back if you bought it in a local retail store. If I had to pay postage in order to send it back, I would keep it, and say, lesson learned.

KG:

If the rod is bent without a fish take it back it it’s straight and true with a bend could be a fish:-)

Either a manufacturing defect or a poor quality blank. Take it back if it is convenient.

I think Leo (flyguy) nailed it. I’d return the rod.

yup. Amazon with prime is about the only mail order company that doesn't charge for things like this. I have warped rods that hook a bunch of fish but Flyguy is the current rod specialist on Fishingstage.

Well thank you, Jeremy, but there are others. Kerry Hanson will beat the pants off me.

Ok. I would just fish with the rod in this topic but that’s just my honest opinion. To me it’s like if my hair isn’t perfect that is what my hats are for.

80-130 jigging rod. Hook a shark or some other fish it’s designed for and it will not be warped. Your arms may get tired but the best investment would then be electric reel to add to it.

Return it. If I handed a rod like that to a guest on my charter boat, my $ tip would be nil as would a return booking. That isn't near as bad as the customer's I would loose when the guest spread the word that I was using below par equipment. Note: If buying a rod at a local store, go through the entire stack if you have to, checking for a rod with the eyes in the right place. The label on the rod does not catch the fish, the rod does.

I would also take it back. The rod builder should have checked the spine of the rod and placed the eyes accordingly. Spine goes up or down depending upon the use.

KG. I watched a rod building video. When it came to the spine they seemed very adamant about the spine being straight. If I remember it will affect the action n more prone to breakage👍

I agree, me and my brother built rods some and the spine is the first thing to check and then making sure you have the guides straight as you go
