Blue Ribbon Babies!

During my early years as a pharmaceutical salesman in the Rio Grande Valley, I got to know and befriend many people, including doctors, politicians, and others.

One of these was a doctor in Brownsville. He was an Ob / Gyn and a fisherman. While being in such a remote area as Brownsville was in some cases a negative, it had some positive aspects.

Only later did I learn that besides his normal practice, this doctor did a rather interesting business in providing babies for adoption to a very select group.
First, when a fellow doctor’s unmarried daughter might become pregnant, she would disappear as if she were spending a year studying in Europe.

When In fact, she flew to Brownsville, and lived with my friend and his family until she delivered. Then he would contact those very select people who were on a list to adopt such a child. Now, in this case, the child would have above-average credentials and would be highly sought after. The new baby would have sterling credentials, with his mother, and grandparents all being known and having above-average credentials.

I never learned how much these blue ribbon babies cost, but I felt sure it was higher than most because there was always a waiting list, and it was never publicized to the public. After the baby was born, quite incognito the mother would reappear after her year studying abroad. While I don’t think the doctor was doing this primarily for the money, I believe it was a special service for his college and medical school colleagues. I also suspect the price charged was significant, but the supply was quite limited and never published. Just Sayin…RJS

Because this Dr. had a lot of friends in central and S. America, he had mentioned he would like to buy some exotic wood to panel a room in his house.

So not too long later a shrimp boat comes into the ship chanel and to Brownsville, loaded with the very same exotic wood he had mentioned. Unfortunately, the U.S. Inspectos discovered it and were going to fine him so serious dough. He explained that he hadn't ordered the wood, it was only the topic of conversation. I do not know how this finally turned out, but I think he had to pay a fine and the wood was confiscated. Just Sayin...RJS
