Here is some data about Musky fishing on Lake of the Woods, Ontario. One of the files is a summary of the size distribution of muskies caught at Red Wing Lodge for every year since 1987. It does not include 2020 when the lodge was closed due to the pandemic.

The other chart shows the distribution of muskies caught by the moon phase (people often wonder if there is a moon phase effect).

Hope you enjoy the data. If anyone has any questions, please let me know.

It would be interesting to know how many of those 50+” fish were in the 35-45” fish released in the early to mid 2000s.

So I have been fishing there many years. We have a saying...the fish is a 'virgin'. A 'virgin' fish is a fish that does not exhibit any signs of have been caught before (i.e., split fins from nets, splits at the gill plates, embedded hooks or signs of hooks, etc).

To answer your question, if you catch a 50" fish, it very likely shows signs of having been caught before. For sure, I have NOT caught a fish over 45" fish that does not show these signs.

I landed my 1st Musky in Ontario, but it was only about 30”. The biggest I ever landed was 43 1/2”, but I have had some BIG ones on that I never got in the boat!
They are fun to battle, but I have never targeted them!

Chart #1 is interesting, but lacks one important thing, how many clients each year produced those numbers. That data could then be correlated with the yearly temperatures and be of some further help. Just thinkin'.

I caught a tagged one out of the river and turned in the numbers on the tag. It was a wv dnr tag and the tag was put in the fish in a lake around 30 miles from where I caught the fish. The fish had grown around 5”. Sorry I can’t remember the date from when it was tagged and the date that I caught it.
