Border Popcorn & The Samples Motel

Border Popcorn& The Samples Motel

After living in the Rio Grande Valley for over three years, we finally build our new home. This was a modest three bedrooms with a maid’s quarters off the garage. The back porch was a 12 foot slab with a roof that extended from one side to the opposite side. Without realizing it, we had created a ‘bed and breakfast’.
Several of my fellow salesmen from around the state came for the White Wing Dove season and would camp at our casa. With the back porch being sheltered and a bathroom off the garage, it served for my hunter friends who didn’t mind roughing it. The white wing dove season was only half days, on two weekends in September.
I recall that a local drive-in grocery had cases of shotgun shells as high as my shoulder and extended from the front door all the way to the back. Then next to this would be cases of beer all similarly arranged. It was the efforts of different oil companies, and service companies to entertain their guests. Since beer and loaded shotguns don’t mix, I was always careful where I hunted, and tried to stay far away from those hunters.
Then, after the hunt was over, most of the hunters would go over to Reynosa. This town was a much more liberal one than any in Texas. Besides the restaurants and bars, there was a Boy’s Town, about a mile to the west of the city of Reynosa.
Since the accepted prophylaxis for Gonorrhea was Aureomycin, this was one or two yellow capsules, four times per day, it became known as “border popcorn”! The only time I ever ventured over to ‘Boy’s Town’ was to retrieve some guys who had a car problem. I believe their battery was dead and I was called to come and give them a jump start. I was not impressed with the sights and sounds of “Boy’s Town” in the harsh light of day! While you had to have a prescription for Aureomycin in Texas, the drug was sold over the counter in Mexico.
No one ever admitted getting a sexually transmitted disease from their hunting trips, but you never know what the risks are. With enough tequila, music, and a Conchita on your arm, what the results might be. Just Sayin…RJS

Love your stories. Have you considered compiling them into a book? A template might be Trout Madness by Robert Traver, nee John Voelker.

MoJoe: Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I have published two books of stories of my life. I am now in the process of writing a novel in addition to these stories on The Fishing Forum. Just Sayin...RJS

You are welcome. Both books have been out for more than a year but I don't try to push their sales. Let me know if you'd like me to write something in each book. I would also appreciate any critiques after you've had a chance to read them. Just Sayin...RJS
