Hello,

I have sport fished through charters a couple times but I want to get out there and fly fish on my own. For my birthday, I got a cabin on the Bogachiel river in March.

Any advice for me?

Welcome to the Forum, King. Watch a lot of YouTube and practice your casting. Your presentation is very important. Good luck.

I took a fly-tying class many years ago. Learned a lot about tying flies and fishing. One of the greatest thrills I had was when I latched onto a trout from a fly I tied. It was an orange and black bitch creek, and I was on the Missouri River at the Hardy Creek Bridge in Montana. That particular bridge was in the movie "Untouchables". I probably should take another fly-tying class. You learn about what kind of fly works for a particular spot.

Waving a hand Kingslayer, haven't yet fished the Bog. myself but have caught a good number out of the Solduc,Callawa and Quilutte rivers using purple twitching jigs and orange and yellow bluefox spinners, recently bought a 7-8 weight flyrod to chase the biguns but haven't had the chance to use it yet.Be prepared for combat fishing as those rivers draw alot of anglers looking to hook up as well. You'll probably have a good spot right out front of cabin, otherwise just look for vehicles parked near fireservice roads off the highway, the trails are usually pretty well traveled to the better fishing holes.Good Luck

In fact my profile picture was a king caught at the three rivers confluence.

In my opinion, it's always a good idea to stop at a local shop or two that specializes in fly fishing.
Usually, for the price of a few flies the shop will give you all kinds of information and suggestions.
When possible, if I'm fishing a new area I how a guide for the first time out.
Enjoy!

There is one fly fishing shop in Forks, only other option is the Forks Outfitters Thriftway, like a Fred Meyers,I do happen to know a lot of the guides operate out of the Three Rivers Campground, half a block from where the Solduc and the Bogichiel become the Quiliutte, but I recall his original post mentioning going out on his own, something I commend,I love going to new waters and using the knowledge and skills I've aquired elsewhere to figure out how to fish unfamiliar territory.

Steelhead fishing is challenging at best. Not as many fish especially natives that are way more aggressive than hatchery fish. That said flyfishing for steelhead is very effective. The challenge is your ability to cast and control the line. Spey and switch rods maybe more efficient, for they allow you to cast further in tighter situation. Practice casting is key. A few years ago I had the opportunity to experiment with fish in the Salmon River. I got to cast to several fish and watch their reaction to different presentation . Found that day it wasn't the big gody swing flys but the tiny beads that pert interest
