Chartered a tuna trip out of Puerto Angel, Oaxaca, Mexico in 2007. I went out solo with 2 locals in an 18' panga. It got a little bit rough and the tuna were nowhere to be had. We did come upon a pod of Gray whales and followed them for a bit. I have seen whales before in California, Oregon, Washington, and Alaska, but never this close. Truly amazing animals. I have to say though their "breath" is quite fishy. Took the sting out of the tuna skunk and we did pickup some snapper on the way in. Enjoy and don't get seasick.

Very cool, Bb, thanks, for sharing. We hit a whale once while we were on a ferry on the Alaska Marine Hwy. It was a big bumb, and the whale came belly up. I don't know if it died or not. Sad!

That is sad. Iβve taken the Alaska ferry up the passage from Bellingham to Juneau. What a great trip!

Gray whales
Look like Hump backs to my old eyes.
I believe you are probably right. It has been a few years since that trip and I stand corrected old eyes.

Alaska is a great state to visit but take your time and enjoy it.

One year when I was about 12 my grandad's buddy took gramps, me, and my younger brother fishing on his boat near Neah Bay in the Straits. Gramps lived on the Johns River in Greys Harbor, so the drive seemed to take for ever. Once in the water we started hitting fish one after the other, then nothing. 45 minutes into rhe trip we had a whale surface next to us close enough to cast to. It was amazing. It hung out on the surface for 5 or so minutes and then disappeared. Exciting! Just before calling it a day a submarine surfaced less than a quarter mile away. It was a life changing moment. I knew that is what I wanted to do when I grew up, and I did, sailing and working in submarines for 28 years. Every time I climb onto a boat, I remember that day 56 years ago.
