The best way to catch those Calif Delta Stripper from boat is with a 1/4oz to 1/2 oz Rattle Trap simply Cast and Reel,Cast and Reel. If you are using a boat and you are lucky enough to spot the birds feeding above the water just motor up as close as possible but don’t spook the crowd and throw a 8 inch Pencil Popper up to the swirl but not into the swirl so to spook the party and walk it back to the boat and watch the blow ups. For bait fishing a one hook rig works best with a slip sinker and a large 8/0 hook. A 8/0 hook may sound a bit big to most but this is what most guides use to catch are fish when we are not trolling with lures with big 4/0 treble hooks on them. Don’t be afraid to try it as we catch both small and large fish on them. Another thing is you will get more hook up’s do to the hook is not so small that the fish can simply play Bite and Spit as the hook is not so small that he can simply spit the look out and who want’s to catch small fish anyways!

The Way I would catch a Delta Stripper is with a wad of 1 dollar bills , that always seems to attract them here in the Pacific Northwest !!!

I have had the most luck using live split tail or mud suckers even bullheads work pretty good. I have never had any luck using lures for stripe bass

Try bigger baits and bigger circle hooks. There are several methods to keep the little ones from stealing.

Use a much bigger hook nothing under 7/0’s I use a 8/0’s hook as Strippers are not hook shy like other fish are they are a predator type of fish and that is why people get so many bait steelers and shakers fish but no big fish. Once you go to a large hook you will start to notice the you catch just as many fish and bigger one’s and it is much easier to hook the fish do to the fact that the fish can bit the hook but he cannot spit it out except to get hooked. Use a one hook setup with a 2 foot leader followed by A swivel and a slip sinker above the swivel.
