The convention center in New Orleans is just a short distance from the river and at the foot of Canal Street. For some reason, rather than all the arrangements being handled locally by me, it was done by the manager of Sales Training from New York. Dick Fox was the sales training manager and had opposed my being given this district. He was the only negative vote and so he was overruled. Anyway, that was water under the bridge and the district was flying high.
While I wasn’t required to attend this convention, I was there every day when the convention opened, along with some of the salesmen of the district whom I had requested to attend.
It was immediately clear that we were going to have a problem. There was a beautiful young woman, sent by a local agency but who had been contracted by Dick from New York to work our booth. She was young and well built. The amazing thing was her attire. She had on a top of fish net that was at least an inch space between each piece of garment. For all practical purposes she was ‘topless” and was creating quite a scene. There were other company representatives all over the building who had to come over to view this ‘babe’!
Since I had nothing to do with hiring either the agency or her, I did nothing and assumed this was what Dick had intended. But when he shows up around an hour later, he immediately tells the young lady to go home and change. Put on something more modest.
I did relay to my immediate supervisor that in the future it would be better for people on the ground to handle any event, rather than from New York, no matter how well intentioned they were.
Later, I did happen to be standing by our booth and that year’s Miss. USA, a model came by, and I had our picture made. She cuddled up to me like we had known each other all our lives! Just Sayin…RJS
