While living in New Orleans for over four years, we had the opportunity to make friends with many interesting people from all over the World. As one example, some neighbors just across the street had some interesting stories. The wife was French and was born in French Equatorial Africa.

Her father had been a high official in the French government and was an overseer of what was being done there.

For long periods of time, they would be living out in the bush and sleeping in tents. She said her father would fire his pistol at vultures through the top of their tent which was only mosquito netting.

She was just a newborn infant and either her mother or her nursemaid was to keep a constant watch over her. But for some reason, both women were distracted momentarily.
A hyena had smelled her, sneaked into the tent, and picks her up by her diaper, and is headed back into the jungle when her mother spots them. She fires her pistol in the air and the hyena dropped the baby! That was one close call.

There was also a seismograph crew working in the area and since there was no electricity available, they decided to advertise in the local papers for a kerosene refrigerator to keep their food cold. One of the responses back was this, “I have been a kerosene refrigerator for over six years…..! Interesting. Just Sayin…RJS
