I am a dedicated fly guy who occasionally will spin cast off my kayak. But I am willing and desiring to learn new stuff. So I picked up a baitcaster rod and reel at a local used shop. (Kayaking for bass you see?) I figured with everything I have read about baitcasters I had better start easy on my wallet. So this is the deal. There are a lot of dials and buttons. Anybody familiar with the Aby Garcia Ambassaduer Plus LH reel? What do I need to know to start with this reel. I will be casting in the front yard for a while. So any advice is truly appreciated

JPS ..... I'm not familiar with your reel, but here's what I would do : Go to the Abu website and get a user or owners manual, or whatever they call it , and it should describe the functions of the buttons and dials, there.
Youtube may also have information that you seek. After going over that stuff, you might not need any assistance, but if ya do, at that point you'll have SPECIFIC questions to ask here.
There's a bit of a learning curve to bait casting, but there's one for fly fishing as well, and you did that, right ? Takes practice and some determination, but the result will be worth it . Good Luck. š.

I don't have my reel in front of me but one of the knobs is the tension for the spool. You loosen it until the weight of your lure/bait will fall to the floor when you push/release your cast button and you're holdin your rod at bout the 11 o'clock position and the lure is at the tip of your rod. When the lure hits the floor, your spool should stop turning. If it is still turning tighten up the knob just a little and try again.
When you cast you should try to keep slight pressure on the spool with your thumb to try to prevent a backlash.
Good luck. Let me know if this helps any.
If you find you really don't like it, PM me and maybe we can make a deal on the reel. I like them a lot and could use another one. Thanks.

Good luck and I am sure you are smarter than I am, every few years I buy a baitcaster to try again and then I remember why I only have spinning reels.

Doc they can be a pain. If you put in the time to practice with it n figure it out you may find you really like it. I luv my Baitcasters. It's like most things takes some time. Good luck šš£
Well, if you are old enough then bait-casting reels were the only show in town. I was in college, probably a senior when I bought my first spinning rig.
Others have mentioned it, but practice, practice, practice! That was one of the merits of spinning, you didn't have to learn much to make a cast, but that was never true with a baitcasting reel. Today, they have come a long way in making them more user-friendly. You will have to educate your thumb, which is the key to making successful casts.
I understand that Now a Japanese company has a bait casting reel with a small computer inside to allow the fisherman to cast without any fear of a back lash. Just Sayin...RJS

Iāve had my bait castor for a few months now still canāt get it out as far as I would like but thatās ok practice in the front yard
I put a couple of split shots and took a pcs of red plastic draw string from a garbage bag so I can see where and when the line is droppingā¦ keep that back lash to a minimumā¦ no birds nest
Donāt give up just keep on trying till you get it
I keep my break on pretty tight
And losing it just a bit at a time
š¤ good luck
You got this
Just breathe and remember to laugh at yourself š
Hey JPS!
Now youāre on it.
Plenty of big fish there in Stockton.
The other comments pretty much sum it up.
Only other advice,
is dial the knobs as hard as the get, ease them off as you get familiar, practice.
Canāt beat a good baitcaster.
Hope youāre not out today, winds howling here in Springfield.
Tight Lines
It's a bit cool here in stockton. Minus 3 right now. Wife has kept me busy feeding horses and breaking ice in the troughs. Thanks for the encouragement. And yeah. I'd rather be fishing
I happen to have the same reel. It is my go to reel for bait fishing and trolling for stripers. Itās matched to an 8ft G.loomis IM6 medium action rod and spooled with 30lb.braid. Being that I am either bait fishing or trolling , long casts are never needed, but I do use the spool tension adjustment for casting based on the weight size that I am using. Read SAW1ās reply. Very good info for making and setting the spool tension.
My thoughts on this subject is once the plug hits the water stop the spool with your thumb! Keep your thumb handy and ready !
Great advice. I practiced in the yard, then moved to the lake. I did exactly what all of you suggested, and I had excellent casting results. No fish, and I drove away with my lure box on the top of the car :( . Lost a few old reliables and a handful of new ones to try. But I was able to cast with moderate efficiency. So not a terrible day.
Going out Thursday and Friday to try again. This time tackle boxes in the car FIRST
