A Rattlesnake too Big to Believe

There is an old Texas sayin, “Believe everyone but brand your cattle!” and I have always taken that to mean more about truth than about cattle. This happened to be a ‘big snake story’ and was reported in the newspaper in Houston as having been killed somewhere in West Texas.

My curiosity was aroused so I had to track down where this monster lived. Now mind you I am accustomed to 6 and 7-foot snakes but this one might have been as big as 8 or 9 feet long! Now the report in the newspaper hinted it was out in the hill country west of Austin. Well, it wasn’t a big deal for me to call the newspapers in those towns, but none knew anything about this giant snake.

After talking to several police dispatchers and inquiring about the giant snake and getting nowhere, I finally go back to the picture in the paper.
With a magnifying glass, I could now determine the name of the county on the prowl car. I may not have a 100% memory, but I knew that county did not exist in the 254 counties in Texas. So, in what state did this story occur? I took a wild guess and chose Florida. Sure enough, there was such a county in Florida and so I called the police station there and inquired about this big snake story. Sure enough, it was found and killed there, and I am not sure but what the size was stretched a bit but believe me it was a huge snake! One that would make anyone act with extreme caution and draw his pistol! Just Sayin…RJS

I believe it was Reptile Gardens (outside of Rapid City, SD) that posted a $10,000.00 reward for the capture of a live, 10’ rattlesnake for their display. That deal may still be in effect as I haven’t been there in 20 years. My kids were all fired up to try to find one, but I talked them out of it 😅

We have timber rattlesnake that are supposed to get very large but I’ve never seen one. Seen plenty of copperheads but never a rattlesnake.

We have this small green rattlesnake around here called the Pacific Green. Verrrry venomous, and the little bastids don't have a very loud rattle. There was an old building on Mare Island marked in red because the basement was full of them. Had to dispatch a couple of them on the hill behind our house because the kids and dogs liked climbing over the retaining wall and playing in the brushy area in Napa County. The hill was our back yard enclosed by a tall board fence. Had to comb the area before the littles could go out and play.

I read in a book from an Arkansas author about a big Rattlesnake. It seems some woodsmen were driving a horse drawn wagon with two horses and this monstrous Rattler was nearby and took a long strike at one of the horses but missed it, striking the wagon tongue instead. The snake ran off into the woods and escaped. The wagon tongue swelled for two days and by the time they whittled it down to normal size they had carried off two wagon loads of shavings from the tongue.
