Texas Governor Visits

The state’s politicians have known that the Rotary Club of Houston has several movers and shakers for Houston, the Rotary Club of Houston had the reputation for years of having the most members who were active in Houston, in Texas, and even the nation.
We regularly had Houston’s mayor, Texas’ Governor, and on occasion the President of the United States, when he would be in town. These meetings were called “The State of the City’, the State of the State, and the State of the Nation!
During my presidency, Ann Richards, the Democratic Governor of Texas came and was to speak at our meeting. As usual, I told the individual who was to do the formal introduction of the Governor to keep his comments to 5 minutes, and not to go over! Let the Governor speak.
I thought that he certainly understood, being he had been on the Texas Supreme Court at one time.
Well, I start our meeting with the usual song and prayer, and then introduce this lawyer whose job is to introduce the Governor.
I am seated next to the lectern where he is standing. He does his five minutes and then intends to continue as if what I said about his only having five minutes did not register. I suppose that if you want to measure a person’s ego, give them a microphone!
Since I am seated close by, I take my left foot and move it over and tap him on his ankle just above his shoe. I wanted him to know that he was to let the Governor speak! Upon this signal between us, he did shut up and sit down! One thing I did learn, is when someone, even if they are somewhat staged frightened when they get in front of a microphone, they want to tell everything they know!
Once I had to pull a kid away and tell him to sit down. He had been on some Rotary function and when in front of the club thought he could go on forever. The president can not let anyone hog the time, no matter what his or her rank or interest may be. Just Sayin…RJS
