I was thinking about investing in one of those new smart reel with the blue tooth settings and was just wondering if if any of you own one or have tried one so I can get some feedback on them.

I didn’t no they had smart reels, but I did make my own line trigger that will leave an led light flashing if I missed a bite. Where I live my liscense allows me to have 2 poles in water at the same time. The trigger don’t set the hook, only tells me to put that beer down and pay attention.

Oh, that millennial thought process never ceases to amaze me.
What on Earth is Bluetooth gonna do for you ? Reel in for you ? GPS your cast ? Play some bitchin' beats to "twitch" by ?
Tackle acquisitions and maintenance is plenty to deal with, ...now I gotta go get some batteries for my reel ?
I started about age 3 with a CANE pole, a Zebco 202 and pole from a generous Uncle Will, at age 7, spinning reel by high school. I don't have the patience (and I am known for my patience !) to "program & link" my fishing gear. That sounds worse than when my buddy wanted to "barcode label" pretty much every thing he owns,"so I can keep an inventory on my computer", he says. This from a guy that had his laptop stolen, then he managed to drop the new one off his balcony porch railing ! Karma is after that boy for depending on his latest e-toy !
I am guessing that you are going to be fiddling with that reel when you lose 'the big one', sorry.

No need to apologise. I completely understand what you mean by millennials thinking process.even though I am one I am 36 so I am not like today's millennials where everything is electronic. I was just thinking about investing in it but am perfectly happy with my Ugly stick and spin caster. But I also should take this time to thank you for your input and redirecting my focus on just going out and fishing. Not worrying about all the bells and whistles for the reel and just putting a line in the water and having fun. So thank you and good luck on the water.

Thanks for going easy on this semi-luddite 66 yr old's rant. I do have to say that while I enjoy many features on my fish finder, my version of an e-toy, I bought it for the depth finder. So I know how deep to troll. The fact that it beeps when it detects a fish simply annoys me, I turn it off once I get a reading. Isn't the point to connect with nature and kinda go Zen with your prey ? I consider it a privilege, in this era, to be able to emulate my ancestors and go 'basic instinct'....and Sharon Stone ain't involved in the least.
Fly fishing is regarded as the ultimate Zen sport, but even the rhythm of 'fan casting', move a few yards, fan cast again( the typical method of bank fishing for bass I learned) is rather Zen-like in it's approach.
I have a giant gripe with the Oregon DFW because of their encouragement to download your license to your smart phone, including salmon/steelhead tags,.... give me a break. Seems rather assumptive that EVERYONE has one, don't they ? No, not everyone. I do, but don't always carry it while fishing, especially wading (even though they tell me that it's waterproof, I had an incident that involved rice & prayers a few years ago,.....trust issues !). Suffice it to say, I insisted on the option --"old" paper version, apparently a first for the clerk who was issuing it at my local tackle shop. She was annoyed at my choice.
Let us please not become so dependent on powered items so much that "life" falls apart when you forget your charger. I occasionally row, rather than motor, my little 9'Sea Eagle 285, even though it's right there.... just roll your wrist and noisily you'll be home 20 minutes quicker.... naaah, I don't mind rowing.

I hear ya brother. I am trying to teach my 13 year old son that where yes technology can be a good thing, there are certain things in life that you need to do to get away from it. Fishing for me is one. I will admit that even I sometimes spend to much time on my smart phone researching stuff for my job or looking at the sports scores( or cheerleaders). But I at least have hobbies that I don't want to much technology involved. Weather it's casting a line or building my car or truck. I would rather use hand tools for the vehicles or a good old fashioned spin caster and plain luck any day of the week. They tried that electronic fishing liscens here in Ohio as well but lucky for me I live in an old farm town who still believes in paper so I get to carry my liscens with me to the lake, river, or pond I am fishing at and leave the cell phone in my pocket. The only timey phone comes out when I am fishing is when I have my kids and they catch a nice one and I want to brag at work.

I f you leave it to the technology what are you gonna do if you wanna fish with a different reel? A educated thumb cost more in the time factor. But it’s something you can keep and be proud of. I had a buddy who could throw anything and not backlash. I envy his skill. Don’t buy it

BankStalker.. unusually fish with more than one reel with me. Sometimes I only use one at a time but I bring a few with me just in case. But I think I am going to pass on buying the tech reel and just stick with the old school method of cast and see what bites. Although I am looking for a good rod and reel so if you have any suggestions I am all ears. If it helps I live in Ohio and usually fish ponds and resivoirs but I would like to venture out in to Lakes and even Lake Erie so as I said any suggestions would be helpful.

I grow up fishing off the bank and back the I learned to fish and catch by both feel and knowledge and concentration not like today’s got to have the newest and best thing to catch a fish but I do you a rod and reel. I grew up with a lot of BassMaster Pro’s that you see on TV like Ish Monroe and it just seamed as if every time Ish or another would get the newest or latest thing like that new $450.00 IM Double X Flipping Stick all the other’s had to get the same thing just because Ish had one. I never could understand why the newer thing was the must get thing and why buy a new expensive Flipping stick over the older Flipping Stick just for fishing in 5 to 6 feet of water and only 10 to 15 feet off the boat and sensitivity only goes so far. Most every bass fisherman that I know seems to think that they have to have the best most sensitive rod with a exposed reel seat as a must have just to catch a fish when it is more a brain game on the fisherman needing to learn to catch the fish not needing the best like the rest and half of them don’t even understand the fish finders that they have much less do they need the newest one.

The main reason "people" rush out to buy the "state of the art" objects, whether it be a$500 rod or reel (friends of mine swear by their $1200 Sage rods, or the latest Pacific NW craze..Wraptor rods @$500+ for a REALLY PRETTY 7' rod !), is the same reason ladies love those Lubiton(sp?)shoes and those Gucci bags....pure ego... nothing more needed to achieve glory, right ? !?
I once out fished my rich uncle with my cane pole and cork bobber w/ worms, crawdads & grasshoppers, he.. with the latest spinning reel and a huge tackle box full of Hibdons, Mepps, Rapalas etc ( state of the art lures in 1963). He got skunked but for a few bluegill and a baby bass... me with 2 nice 2-3 lb channel cats, a mess of hand-sized crappie....and a 5lb+ Largemouth. Needless to say, I fed the family that night, while his contribution was limited to bragging about my prowess...and driving !
Yeah, I have a HUGE collection of tackle and gear, probably could rid myself of 75% and still be adequately geared. It also allows me to react to a buddy who covets my gear, by saying, "why don't you just take that rig home with you,...and here, take a couple of these lures you were admiring". Believe me, I feel WAY happier than he does at the moment. I acquire much of my collection at yard and estate sales, so.. pennies on the dollar. My financial output is miniscule compared to the reward.... especially when you hand a kid, who has been watching you from afar, a spincast and say, "Here, let me show you how..." The grin on that child's face is etched in your memory forever. (Just make sure to ask Mom or Dad first, ...don't wanna be creepy!) I buy and carry with me rigs to specifically give away or provide. I clean them up, oil 'em, sometimes re-spool, usually have less than $10 in one rig (amazing how a dirty, dusty $4.99 Goodwill find can look exactly like that $40 or $50 combo @ Walmart the kid begged Mom for !)
I often equate "outrageous sensitivity in this $1000 rod" to $3000 ea. speakers for the stereo....dude, you are a NORMAL human... without super powers... aren't you ?
Anyway, follow your bliss. I definitely grin a bit more when driving my shiny Audi TT roadster, than when I get in my 31yr old F250 4wd, but either can get me to the fishin' hole efficiently.

For some reason mine does not work in a boat, I think I loose my ground or so I have told the wife.
Thats my story and I am sticking to it.
