I often wanted to try one of those bait casters, everytime I do for one I hear all the negatives about them.
I bought a few of those Zebco rods, 5' and good old Zebco 33 reels. I can cast them and get them back under brush and low trees along the bank.
Maybe Santa will bring me my first bait casters.... maybe I just need to try one for myself.

Hey Callturkey i have just the combo you need.by the way my name is Gary and im from Lancaster,PA.

Really, $65 is not a bad price

What scares me is the 7' rod. Let me think about it and I'll let you know this weekend.
I appreciate it.
My is Mike

That's good advice Andy.
I've heard that about those reels, but I think I would be in to trying One.
Never fished with braded line but I'm open.
Now that The last several seasons I've been catching some big fish (for me they're big), and I've lost a few, quite a few. I am constantly playing with the drag on the Zebco 33, but I do believe it's time for a change.
My biggest fear is casting back underneith stuff, I got that down pretty good, especially with the short rod.
Just wondering, do I need to go to the 6' + or can I stick with the short rods?

Think I'm going to find out before to long, now's the time to practice.

Thanks Andy for the good advice.
That's good advice Andy. br I've heard that about ... (show quote)

Glad to help perhaps a 6'6 to 6'8 moderate heavy might be a good place to start. It may give you a little more control for those tighter places but still enough backbone to horse one in. The nice thing about braid is that with 30#+ you are not going to break off any fish unless your knot is bad or you've caught a few and not retired your lure. The line diameter is very thin on 30 # braid but strong. Braid also floats so this may be something to consider if using alot of deeper plastics and lures. I use braid 10 #on my small spinning reels with a short mono leader. When I'm using my bait casters for bass with frogs my drag is as tight as I can get it, braid does not stretch and that gives better hook sets on heavy frog hooks. I've hooked 4+ #ers with 2' or 3' of line out and flipped them into the yac never worry about breaking line . Does cause some concern on bare feet though.

Can you access that honey hole and fish the hardwater? I do. The action is lively all winter.

Here's some of my "winter work" I'm still kinda fishn' in a way. I get clear blanks and airbrush them and epoxy them. Here's another TIP.. if you put rubber bands on the hooks like you see in some of my pictures you can put a bunch of lures in a container , reach in and pull one out without them hooking together. Dollar Tree sells very small but stretchy clear hair ties that work great . You just nip the band with clippers and hooks are free to go. Really helps in a box that gets alot of ruff handling and lures are mixed with different sizes.

WOW Andy...that is some spectacular workmanship! The fish are going to go absolutely berserk (in a good way) when you introduce them to some new colors and patterns! Sometimes I think they get bored eating the same old stuff that is offered from Nature!

That's awesome! That takes a lot of discipline and concentration. I've tried to do that but it just got overwhelming to me.
I picked up a guitar the year I retired and got pretty good at it, I practice every day.
I wish I had the patience to set down and make lures and jigs like that. Lord knows I would save myself some money.
Beautiful work there Sir!!!!

Great looking work nothing burns up winter time quicker than a session at the tying bench. I've been trying for over fifty years and always love sitting down and immersing myself in the moment. Perhaps soon I will pass the majority along to my 15 yr old nephew and keep the art alive. Again fine looking work and it's always a thrill when you catch a fish on something you created yourself. Thanks for sharing.
