Do you remember what ceramic it was?

I have bought very large rings, actually it was agate for a different way to make a SPIRAL WRAPPED (ACID) rod.

Only place I've ever seen agate is in really old rods. Most people have never seen an acid rod. I tied a .arched set of four for light trolling. Won't do it again unless someone wants something unique. Those roller tip cost 25 bucks each.

This is on my mind. I am repairing three fishing rods brought to me. The Ceramic ring is knocked out of the Tip Top guide of the first two and the third has the last three single foot running guides yanked out from under the guide wraps. Also the rods look like as the old saying ridden hard and put away wet. Kinda poor care of them. There wasn't any rust so he must have rinsed them off after fishing the salt, give him that much credit!

One thing I keep in mind repairing old rods (especially ones that were treated bad) is they are used for fishing 🎣, they aren't gonna be in a fashion show 😁

In a case like this I usually strip the guides, use a fine sandpaper to smooth the rod, then do a very light coat of epoxy to give it a new finish. That way it's just like wrapping a new rod. Takes more time but if I don't do the I just replace the guides that at broken or missing. It's not too hard to match the wraps.

I do that if it's a rod I think is worth the effort also on older rods sometimes it hard to match the guides since they may not be available anymore

All my heavier rods are spiral rods, and casting are standard wrap.

That is for sure, for example Fuji stopped making Black frames they say because of the environment.

Good morning, guys. Keep in mind that you can't make silk out of a sow's ear. Fix it and forget it.

That may be true Flyguy but I did have a few old girl friends that did clean up well.

It was a fun project when o did it. I picked up 4 7 foot 30# class blanks cheap. I've used them bottom fishing. They're really great, no twist to the rod when you retrieve. Managed to pull a 32#amberjack out of 200 feet of water without hav I ng to use a death grip on the rod.

Yep, I have some 7' composite Lamiglass That I use a lot for trolling or bottom fishing (20-50) and while experimenting in making them, instead if using a bumper guide to keep line off blank when line transitions to bottom, I used the Agate ring for the line to rub on when it transitions to bottom.

I wrapped the guides around rotati,g about 36* at each guide

Yes, several methods. The easy way is to put one small low guide at 90 degrees half way between stripping guide and first 180 degree guide (which are about 9 - 11" apart. i like to complete the rotation before the first 1" deflection of the blank) to just keep the line off the blank. Plus several other methods such as yours. So I have got the right size Agate ring to place in that spot on a couple rods.
