Last month I caught my pb speckled trout measuring 27 inches near broad creek. The fishing was pretty slow all month and couldn’t get on many fish at all, that was one of very few trout I caught this year. I haven’t been out in weeks and am wondering if the colder water has brought the specks in. My favorite bait to use for trout has always been a voodoo shrimp under a popping cork. Im relatively new to trout fishing and wanted to know if I should move from popping corks and other top water lures over to soft plastics, crank baits, and suspending lures now that the water has chilled off. Should I keep fishing the shallows or start moving to deeper holes? Any tips will be greatly appreciated, have a great day.

Cams, I am a former Belhaven resident and at this time of year it seems the trout were running in the channels of the tributaries. Pending temperature further up stream worked out well also. I put the popping cork away on those chilly days until the spring and I recall most catches were from them running deep.

As for bait my best luck was with the Z Man diesel style with Pro Cure shrimp scent applied. Color of course made a difference pending water clarity. But most catches were with the coloring showen here.

You are welcome Cams. Good luck out there and take advantage of these 50* days. 8am to 10am seemed like a good feeding time. Unlike the summer months when 5am was the go to time.
