The old-fashioned way...try here, try there, vary your depth look for structure or cover. Make note of what works and repeat it next time conditions are similar.

While I was growing up there wasn't any electronics. We didn't even have electricity until I was about a freshman in high school and we milked cows by hand. The telephone came while I was in college and then the "green box", which started it all. I was raised on the North Branch of the Whitewater in SE MN. and was taught to fly fish by "Black Bill" a trout fishing ledgin. He taught me how to read the water and where the trout would most likely be hiding waiting for food to float by. Fly fishing is still done the same way, no electronics, no problem.

When I was a boy and my family went to a lake to fish the trail in usually opened on the outlet. We started there and moved around the lake til we found fish. Structure, cover, food. Look for minnows in the shallows. As stated drop offs dead falls brush and weeds. Fish are fish. Bass, trout walleye, crappie, bluegills, perch or cats. They all eat. Granted they eat different things but they all eat and congregate where the food is most likely. I read once that 90% of the fish can be found in 10% of any given body of water. Once you learn a piece of water you will be able to return with confidence of finding fish over and over. That's the secret to most fishermen's secret spot. Don't need electronics you need patience and perseverance and a bit of luck. Stick to it you will win. Tight lines and good fishing! Graywulff

I fish vegetation, such as lily pads, and hydrilla in the summer time. Those give shade, and lower temps in the middle of the day. I like to use a moss boss lure for both of those. where you have trees and limbs I'd use spinner baits making sure to bounce you bait off the cover. Remember if your not getting hung up your not fishing. Work your baits at different speeds and movements

When I was younger and starting out on my own large mouth bass fishing was all new to me. Back in the day of Virgil Ward and championship fishing. The number one lure, the beetle spin. Anyway what I did than and still do, is cast horizontal to the shore line. Do this alone with all the previous excellent advice. Good luck, have fun.

Interesting subject! Research topo maps and google earth view too! Find deeper water, banks, aquatic growth and overhanging branches! Stop and listen to wildlife at sunrise and sunset, hear fish popping on surface waters, etc. My favorite on little ponds is to catch a fresh shad, hook up and send out searching for you on a cork! Won`t be long before you know where bass are feeding at!

I try points first, remembering that coves are points in reverse! I "fan cast" which means that I cast to a spot down the shoreline then next cast is maybe 15 degrees out and work around the compass until my last cast is down the shoreline in the opposite direction from my first cast.

All I need to c is some reeds or heavy rocks going down in the water. Bass like their hiding places whether they in current or a pond

Look for structure, structure, and more structure.
Early spring, look for shallow tapered flats leading to deep water nearby. Always wear grey or brown polarized glasses, and look for bedding bass.
Post spawn the bigger bass will move to deeper water, and will move back shallow in the fall to fatten up for the winter months.

Printed lake topographical maps can be a great source of general locations on lakes you have never fished before.
