I tried to find one that showed the pectoral fins (feet?). I didn't know that they "walked " until I read it.

You got it Mike. Sea Robins have round pectoral fins (wings).

Fred, I've never caught or seen either fish. A good look at the subject fish then studying wv Mike's picture of a batfish compared to your photo of a Sea Robin I must agree with the subject fish being a batfish. that's just my opinion. My opinion & a dollar won't buy me coffee at McDonald's. Tight lines.

I've caught a million Sea Robins over the years Coon, that's how I knew it wasn't one. Once I looked at the Walking Batfish, which I've never even heard of, I knew that was it. It's identical to the original picture.

We never kept them Ranger. They're all over Long Island Sound, and show up any time you're bottom fishing. Probably caught my first one when I was 5 or 6 yrs old. I've heard that the back meat tastes like lobster, but there was never enough meat on the ones we caught to make it worthwhile.
They do bark like a dog when out of the water though.

Thanks, sometimes it’s hard to tell the difference in species when they are so similar especially when it’s saltwater because they are so many.

I think they came up with Walking Bat Fish, but diffenert parts of the country have different names for the same fish so could be a Toadfish or Monkfish where you are from. Out here what I call a perch is way different than the perch back East.

Definitely Not monkfish, not toadfish.
Yes, it’s walking batfish.
