Pretty good day for the bucks and birds

Youngest son Ben went down to my buddy’s place in Tennessee, usually accompany him but had pressing obligations this year. He got a nice little buck with the muzzleloader as did his cousin Matt. Slightly better than average bucks for my buddy’s area. A friend and I got out for some game commission stocked birds and did fairly well. Strong NW winds and a high of 38. Those birds can really move it with the wind on their tails. Pretty fun day.

How'd the pup do Brad?. I miss bird hunting. Decent size deer the boys harvested. A few good meals in your future 👍😊

Didn’t have Ben’s pup Boone out Grizz. Ben’s got some strict training protocols in place and didn’t trust the old man in his absence.

Thanks Fred, I missed a pretty easy shot before I connected with the others.

Gordon, Ben has already promised me one and he’s got the other. He’s got Friday and Saturday to hopefully bring some more home.

Yeah, Boone was itching to go when he saw the hunting garb and shotgun but son Ben needs to be in command of that rascal in the field. I guess I respect that, Boone is only 8 months old and he wants him trained his way without the interfere of another dog just yet.

It happens. I missed the first bird my Shortie pointed when she was 10 months old. The look she gave me was like “Really, do I need to catch it, too?” In my defense, I didn’t take her seriously (dumbass move) as we crossed behind a group of 5 guys (with 3 labs) that just passed through this same field. I waited with her on the leash until they were out of range then entered the field, heading in the opposite direction. 30 seconds later Sam was on a rock solid point in about 4” of grass. The wind was about 30mph and the rooster was flat on his belly, probably still hiding from the group that passed by earlier. I didn’t see him and he exploded straight downwind and I neglected to catch up with him…I then got “the well-deserved LOOK”

I’ve experienced “ the look” more times than I can remember OJ and to your credit those downwind birds and sailers flushed by another group of hunters are challenging.
