San Diego Bay Submerged Jetty History?

I’m curious about the history of the submerged jetty, that protrudes from north island, and is marked by the 2 warning markers. I’m not asking about Zuniga Jetty, which runs south from North Island and forms the eastern edge of the mouth of the bay for about 1.5 miles. I have attached a satellite image showing the jetty I’m curious about. Circled in red. It protrudes in a east/west direction from north island just south of the naval munitions dock.

There is quite a bit of information in the history of the Zuniga Jetty…which is mostly submerged. But, I can’t find anything on the smaller jetty. Does anyone know the history, or can you point me to information on it?

Oh yeah, based upon my experience of losing tackle on it, it probably has a few tons of lead attached to it.

John Wayne cursed the jetty. Click the link. There is some information.

What are you wanting to know about it? I will figure there is some good fishing there.

I’m aware of the history of the Zuniga jetty, which is interesting in itself. But, I’m curious about when, by whom, and why the other one was built.

There is several Stagers down in your area. I was in CBad for several days with my Rockstar buddy that has lived there since 1986 about 6 weeks ago. He calls it Carls not so bad. He plays at several places there. Had an Art Studio in village as well across the street from the Cantina. We were there for the last night it was open ( cantina ) in the village. I am the fishing guy. He came up here and went out fishing for coho on my favorite charter and caught the largest fish on the boat.

I’m aware of the history of the Zuniga jetty, as well as John Wayne’s short cut not working out. But, I’m interested in the other jetty that is slightly in from Zuniga point that is perpendicular to North Island and runs East West. It’s probably less than 100 yards long, and is submerged except in the lowest of tides and if waves suck water away from it.

It isn’t named as far as I know. There are two markers identified on charts as “San Diego Bay Submerged Jetty Light ( E & M)

I heard rumor that it predates the construction of the Zuniga Jetty.

Perhaps the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey people can be of assistance. If not them I would check with the PIO at NAS North Island.

Now that's great advice.
