We have quite a few excellent bass fishermen on FS. WVMike, Ivey, and many others. I don't want to slight anyone. You know who they are.

I started fishing after about 40 years of almost no fishing, to fishing two to three times a week and recently buying a boat. I realize didn't parts of the country have different weather, water conditions, etc.

I've fished primarily with minnows and an occasional top water or bass lure. I've had some luck catching bass with minnows.

Here's the question (and I know answers will be all over the board), if you could only pick one lure or live bait, which one has given you the most success? Caught the most bass? It will be interesting to see if there's a majority on live bait or a type of lure. Thanks for your response.

If limited to just one...a spinner bait due to it's versatility. can be used in just about any situation. Not always the top choice but for one lure that's my pick.

Big fat live night crawler. Hooked weedless just like the rubber one. Anything and I mean anything will eat a crawler. I know some bass fisherman frown on live bait. Why you think you can’t use them in tournaments. Almost any body of water some kinda good bait can be obtained just digging in the bank. Just my opinion. 🇺🇸🐠on

Although I have caught most of my bass on live bait, I am learning that artificial baits and lures can be very effective. I guess my favorite is a weedless frog as those blowups are exciting, but you need weeds and fairly heavy equipment. I have also had consistent success with a weedless, pre-rigged worm called a Ike-Con dragged slowly across or over the weeds.
My kid kicked my a$$ one day fishing a wacky rigged Senko type worm, but I have yet to learn that technique.
Sorry…I colored outside the lines by naming more than one 🤦🏼‍♂️

I’d agree that nothing out fishes a live crawler! That said for bass fishing I only use plastics and lures usually. My go to would be a beetle spin if I had to pick one. They always produce for me.

No problem John. Just accumulating ideas with the question.

For large mouths a Lazy Ike
For small mouth a safety pin spinner with a marabou jig or just the jig

Why not pm those excellent bass fishermen and ask them?

I could do that very easily. I thought it might be an interesting question that thousands of FS users could benefit from the answers. We share a lot of info, jokes, pictures, etc. This is just gathering fishing info on the Main Page. I talk to bait store owners, other fisherman, read things online about bass lures and bait and ask questions on FS.

If the limit is 1 bait, and I only use artificials, I would say a Stick worm. It's usable in almost any conditions. Open water rigged Wacky, deep with a traditional Texas rig or Carolina rig, shallower and weedy rigged weightless. I believe its the most versatile.

Texas rigged, green pumpkin, plastic
worm with long "J" hook style swimming tail.

It can be retrieved a variety of ways and depths.

Deadly around structure, in grass, aquatic plants, and under muuck.

It can be cast onto the bank or surface structure and " hopped" into the water. It can lay still and twitch. It can swim slowly or quickly.

BD

Ps. Any thoughts on this one Betts?

A 3 and one half inch smoke purple tube. I’ve caught smallmouth and largemouth as well as musky and perch and a few other varieties on that

Do you fish that on a regular tube jighead Terry, or rig it on a worm hook? I think they call that a "Stupid Tube" , on the worm hook.
