Welcome to the stage Deb.
That's one heck of a ray. I've landed a few of them myself and know that that's a lot of work to land one that big. Congrats to you. Thanks so much for the pic.
What is that? Looks like a giant bat ππ
ππππ. Never caught a ray. Looks like a good fight tho

Yeah. Better have a good rod with lots of backbone or you might not ever get them landed.
I've caught all mine while Striper fishin throwin lures. You foul hook them and that makes it even harder to land one. Thank goodness we're on a boat so we can chase them if needed. All we're tryin to do is get our lures back.

They fight like a submarine for the first few minutes and taste great. I cut slabs off the wings, remove the skin and cartilage then punch out scallops with a 1" piece of conduit (6" long--sharpened on one end). Scallops get dipped in Tempura--scraps go into the brine bucket for crawfish and crabs.
I also keep a short bristle scrub brush in my tackle box to scrub the slime off before I start cutting.
If you land one, flip it bottom up before you try to remove any hooks or lures. I use a hardwood broom handle with the largest barbless hook I could find lashed to the end. Hook penetrates more easily than a gaff and doesn't I was as much damage. Hook the tip of one wing then pull it over the other.
If you accidentally get stuck, soak the wound in hot but not scalding water and immediately have someone else drive you to the nearest urgent care or ER (you've only got about 25 minutes before the pain from the venom starts to hit the max). The heat helps deactivate the venom if you don't have water, use hot coffee or a heat pack.
Sterilized bat ray barb
