Recently retired and we have a condo on SPI. I’m interested in learning about shoreline fishing, bay fishing and jetty fishing for Reds, flounder, whitening, trout, and perhaps Tarpon.
Any and all information will be helpful from tackle to when, where, and how.

Good morning, rvermeer. Welcome to the Forum. I Wintered down there for 6 years. You can take the bay boats out, they are cheap, but a waste of time. You can surf fish all along the beach, but bring a lawn chair and a cooler of beer. There is also good surf fishing North of SPI. Learn to read the water as to where the deeper holes are. Fish in-coming and out-going tides. The water has to be moving for you to catch fish. Use live shrimp and fish bites for bait. The best place to get your shrimp is the Quik Stop in Port Isabel. If you fish the jetty at the park, and it's good, be careful, it is treacherous. The pier in St. Isabel isn't bad and there are some nice locals who fish it frequently. It's ok. I got to know some people down there that had boats, which was the clear deal. If I were going to be down there for a while, I would get a smaller boat a good kayak. A good pair of waders is a good idea too, but again, be careful. The deeper parts of the bay are good. Good Luck. If you need more help, PM me

Hi vermeer, I live in Brownsville and surf fish SPI. There are a few locals, that are also members of FS, that I hook up with from time to time. Matter of fact, thinking of going this Wed, 11/2. I can let you know if I can make it and if you're interested we can meet up. Usually I/we fish just north of the stables.

The staples are in my stapler, at office depot or staples stationary.
The stables, however, are approx 2 miles North of beach access #6.

rvermeer1: When I lived in the Valley I found that wading in the summer months to be good in the Brownsville Ship channel which comes in from the Gulf, right at the end of SPI. Usually on a tide change. Just Sayin...RJS
