I have been looking into getting an intermidiate salt water setup for inshore/pier fishing, and was thinking the Daiwa BG 3000 with an Ugly Stik Elite (Medium) would be a good pairing.
However, I recently saw that you can get the Penn Spinfisher VI 4000 (medium) combo for $145, about the same price as what I was looking at for the Daiwa BG. Do you think I should spring for the Penn Fisher or the Daiwa BG setup for something that will be nice to use and last me 5+ years?

I have no experience with the latest generation of SS reels. I do, however, have numerous examples of previous generstions ranging in size from a 4300SS to a 7500SS. A couple of them are over twenty years old. Several are over ten. They've been reliable, durable tools for me.

I don't like buying rod and reel combos for that very reason. The rods tend to range from mediocre to junk. I'm picky about rods. Buy the reel alone and find a nice rod.

Which rod would you recommend?

I like the actions on the Hurricane Redbone line.

left Penn when u couldn't buy the SS anymore..
tried Okuma and now own 2 .. mine are
for medium light set-up cast and retrieve
fishing but sure you could go larger for
bottom fishing.. my Okuma Helios 30 was
$100 two years ago worth every penny !
I've got 2 spin fisher/10 ft graphite surf rod combos - normally used for blues, stripers & fluke. Tied into a 100+ pound ray, the Penn equipment performed admirably. I would buy them again.
I have the spin/fisher as well as well but the 5000 combo for the same fishing as oldsalt and I would never trade it for anything . the ss series 420 and 850s i have been using over 30 yr. and enjoying a new Battle 6000 combo among others . just spoiled I guess .
