I have never fished in the East, however, don't know the geography makes that much difference. Lakes from shore...... Best area to try are close to inlets and outlets. Also points, drop-offs, brushy areas. Yes sir you can use a bobber and bait. Naturals, nightcrawlers, grasshoppers and crickets on #6 or 8 hook. Otherwise power bait or salmon eggs or corn if legal. Good luck, good fishing. Graywulff

I can honestly say that in 76 years, I have never caught a trout using a "bobber". A strike indicator, yes, many times. Is there a difference? Whatever, all freshwater fish eat night crawlers and all saltwater eat live shrimp. If I were you, I would try to throw a crawler out, without any weight, towards some type of structure or moving water and slowly retrieve it just above the bottom. You may not catch a trout but you could catch a fish and you would be "fishing". Tight Lines, Good Luck, and welcome to the Forum.

Many a trout has taken a worm threaded on a size 8-10, baby split shot a foot above the hook and a bobber. I prefer a slip bobber so I can get deep if necessary, but still be able to cast properly. Apparently SOME seem to regard bobber fishing as somehow pedantic and juvenile, whereas fly fishing is much more "pure". Could not be less interested in -- methods as a means of defining "fishing". I own and use pretty much every type of rod, reel, lure, tool, you name it (except Sabiki, gotta try that). I have rigs that cost hundreds (Sage, Abel etc) and I have Goodwill and yard sale finds. I use them all. I personally believe fishin' is fishin', hey I have friends back in Kansas who "noodle"....still fishin'...for food. They come out to Oregon and get caught....jail time !
To each his own, on method. And...yes... admit it (we know it's tiny ...)....an indicator on a fly line is merely "sophisticated state-of-the-art"...... BOBBER FISHIN' !
Tight Lines & Pretty Bobbers !

I have pretty good luck floating a minnow out on a bobber and hitting the trout. If you are fishing a stocked area the red powerbait nuggets work well as that is what style of food they are used to. After a few weeks of being in the wild waters they start eating minnows so try using baitfish native to the water you are fishing. That’s about all I can give you. And also use a number 8 or 10 hook like the other folks on here suggested. Best of luck to you!! Fish On

Interesting info about stocked trout feeding on feed not wild food! Keep that in my bag of tricks when mountain fishing next time! Sounds like little red baits are in store now, know red salmon eggs naturally work well.

Red or orange seem to work best. Near as I can tell the stockers take about 6 months to go totally wild but they are also put and take so most don't make it that far. The wild ones taste better.

Go figure the wild ones taste best. We are southern folks that vacation up in them mountains for fall leaf season and some fly fishing practice. Cherokee Indians stock many spots and this October gonna try and find wild ones? Thanks

I prefer the Carolina rig. 2 # test line. 12" to 18" leader. #10 to #8 Owner mosquito hook. 1/4 oz. Egg sinker weight. Toss it 20 ft. from shoreline off a part of the lake where it gets deep quickly (15'-20' of water). Use inflated nightcrawler or Rainbow power bait by Berkely. You'll catch trout best at the beginning of fall, all of winter, till the beginning of summer.

Best I can say is rooster tails there’s mikes marshmallows that you can buy specifically for trout there’s also a putty type that you just ball up and throw on your hook pore make them and let them air out for a bout 10 minutes so they harden stays on hook better there’s the good ol fashion worm all except rooster tail you can use a bobber on then one of my favorites the spoon
