Spent a large portion of my life fishing the Kern. Particularly the 20 mile section below Johnsondale. Even cabined at the R ranch. Heading back that way in the spring so thought I would start a topic about fishing on the Kern. To include lake (or is it now "pond") Isabella. I know wooly buggers are a permanent fixture in my fly box when on the Kern. But I am open to any other ideas (oh yeah, never leave home without EHC in various colors and sizes
About 30 years ago I caught my PB largest Trout on the Kern River I was using a Black fury spinner the fish đ was maybe 3.5 lbs
Also at the same time period as a friend who was with me would say I got burned on the Kern
Hooked into what I thought was a trophy trout but when I finally got it in turned out to be a 20 lb Carp
DARN đ¤Źđ
My PB trout was also on the Kern. 23 inch rainbow, wild caught about 4 miles outside of Kernville. Used a muddler minnow I had tied. That was back in the 90"s when there was actual water in the lake and river.

I attended carshows in Kernville in Oct put on by Kenny Rhodes and I always caught planted rainbows on gold panther martins and when they werenât biting them I used Pautskes balls of fire salmon eggs. Never got skunked in 5 or 6 years fishing there. I live in Alpine Ca San Diego area, a long drive in a 37 ford streetrod but it was fun to see a carshow and fish to. I havenât been back there since 2015. Fishandrods.
Merle had a home on the Kern. He didn't write the song, but could have. A lot of people die on that river every year
The Kern also carries gold for the prospector.
Yes the Kern river below the Dam going through the Kern canyon is very dangerous back when I used to go there in the 80âs and 90âs there was signs posted along the river stating how many people who died in the river
I didnât know that they are still producing gold for the river
I did know back then they were staking claimâs in the upper Kern river
LOL. Now that is a new take on the song
I was fishing up there in May, and I had a very difficult time getting a place to fish. The homeless encampments are getting worse. The trash along the stream banks is incredible. My wife was fishing a hole north of McNalley's and a car pulled in , unloaded a bunch of kids, and they started throwing rocks over my wifes head into the pool. They were from LA BTW, most of the Kern waters have been ruined by the LA visitors. During Covid all the Kern waters were heavily, and negatively, impacted by LA. (I also posted this in another topic.)

Sadly it is getting that way all over. If they are not throwing rocks their dogs are swimming in the water
3 of us took fly rods up to the river, the 20 mile section, this past Saturday January 28th. Water was cold (46 to 48 degrees), murky, high and very fast moving. Mainly fished wooly buggers. No luck. Still a good day. McNally's burgers for lunch was a definite hit

McNallys was where we ate dinner when we attended car shows in Kernville they had really good steaks. Havenât been there since 2015 when we stayed at the bed and breakfast in town, it was the last year the lady had it available as she sold the place to a family that were going to use it as a family place to go to. It was the first time it was available for us. We had been staying at the motel next door. We would stay up there for 4 days at a time for the car show and fishing. Here is the car we drove from Alpine ca, foothills of San Diego.
