I suppose most adults who were alive at the time, remember every detail of the fall of the N**i party and Hitler and his general staff in the last days just before the Russian troops entered the city of Berlin. There was no doubt a lot of fear and anxiety in knowing the Russians were massing their forces to take Berlin regardless of the cost. It was rumored that the Russian army had brought up more than 100 artillery pieces, and placed them touching wheel to wheel to begin a massive shelling of the city in pr********n for the assault of their ground troops.

No one knows when Hitler realized he had lost the war and was not going to have to face the music of defeat. Hitler arranged a hasty marriage ceremony to wed Eva Braun. He gave very precise orders on how the bodies of Eva Braun and himself were to be taken out in the courtyard, drenched in gasoline, and burned completely up. However, after Eva took the poison pill and he followed as well as fired a bullet into his head, his orders did not carry the same weight. His staff did set the bodies afire but did not wait around to make sure they were completely incinerated.

There was hand-to-hand, house-to-house combat and the Russians weren’t too careful about taking prisoners. We do not know exactly what happened, or which troops discovered the partially burned bodies of Hitler and his wife later. As many Germans, as could possibly flee, did so toward the Allied lines to avoid being captured or k**led by the Russians.

There is no clear information, at least about what happened after the Russians had entered the bunker headquarters of Hitler and his general staff. There was ‘no quarter’ given, but this was understandable after what the German army had inflicted on the Russian cities in the ill-advised invasion of Russia by German troops in the operation known as Barbarossa. Many on both sides died from either direct combat, starvation, or being frozen to death. But the Russians held on and now this was payback time.
As a desperate move, the German army recruited and put into the lines boys as young as 10 to 12, and most were slaughtered right along with the remainder of the Wehrmacht reserves. I suspect there one a few rare cases where a grown man serving as a German soldier survived. Perhaps it was unspoken, but it was certainly the ‘defacto’ case that was carried out.

Some troops, and perhaps a special team were hot on the trail to find Hitler or his body. The Russians found the partially incinerated corpses and as far as we know took them back to Russia. It was rumored that Joseph Stalin prized his ashtray which was the top of Hitler’s skull!

I have heard a rumor that early in Hitler’s reign when he came to power in the 1930s he granted an audience to a top Imam from Palestine, and asked his opinion of what he should do with the Jews. In which the Imam, fearing that Hitler might send them all back to Palestine said, “Burn them!” And that became the general plan going forward. Just Sayin…RJS
