Name that fish; anyone.
Caught two of these that I Caught in Sheridan Lake, South Dakota and not sure what they are. Both were about 6 inches. I did a little investigation on my own and believe to be a Golden Shiner all grown up.
Any help would be appreciated.
Looks like a kentucky shad
You are right. It’s the largest of the minnow family. Top choice for large mouth bass.Hapycamper it’s great bait so next time use as bait

That is indeed a Golden Shiner.
It looks like a fat well fed golden shiner but it also looks like a Rudd. Not sure if they are in your area. They are from Europe and have made there way here.
I looked at the disrobution of the Rudd. They are in South Eastern SD on the border with MN. It is fat like a Rudd. They are generally fatter than a golden shiner. I’m guessing like everyone else but it does look like a Rudd.
The impact of the rudd’s introduction is relatively unknown. Rudd are able to breed with the native golden shiner, an important baitfish, creating hybrids which could lead to a loss of genetic diversity in golden shiner populations. Young rudd compete with native species for habitat and food, such as algae and small invertebrates. While adult rudd can eat large amounts of aquatic plants along shorelines, which can degrade spawning and nursery habitat for native fish such as northern pike, muskellunge and yellow perch.
They have been around a long time and don’t appear to be a problem.

After looking up Rudd I found you to be right on. Looked just like the ones I caught in Sheridan Lake last summer. Thanks for the response and info.
Are Rudd smaller or larger than Golden Shiners?
