heading for hat creek in early october, something i have done for many years, and was wondering how the fishing has been . . .
usually fish the powerhouse areas but will be bringing my 10-year-old grandson and was hoping to find some good areas in the upper creek (old station to cassell) that might be easier for him . . . or any lakes that might be easier for him to catch a trout . . .
has anyone had any luck in burney creek above the falls ???
also, do you know if the planting schedule will be in effect through october . . .
thanks . . .

Last week I fished the Hat at both Cave campground and at Cassel. At Cassel people were catching trout on worms and the fly fishers were catching them on wooley buggers mostly. I had no worms at the time so I used a jig and as soon as I switched from power bait I caught a trout on the first 2 casts but the fished figured out what I was using and quit biting. The crawler fishermen continued to catch fish consistently. I was camping at Cave and went back and got some crawlers and caught my limit at Cave.
Cassel would be the best place for a kid to catch a trout. Easy access right at the bridge. Check the DFG website for planting info. They usually stock it pretty good at this time of year with the average fish about 12 inches.

Baum lake has a fishing dock. Usually u will see fish rising close to the right side. There is a channel there between all the weeds. You can get em with a bobber with night crawlers or I like using a pink Berkeley power worm. Easy fishing n fun for kids to see the bobber go down

had a great week fishing at hat creek . . . been going there for 50 years and this was one of the best as far as catching trout . . .
i release everything with the exception of bringing one back for grilling for me and my golden retriever . . .
while the world seems to have changed a lot, parts of hat creek never seem to change . . .
and if you're ever in old station, check out JJ's Cafe . . . great food, great owner . . .
