Here for two weeks and a newbie to surf fishing. Just want to know what’s running a few places to go and what to use for artificial lures. I’m strictly catch and release. Just looking to spend some time on the incoming tides. Hey you come to northern CA late fall through early spring and I provide you with the above info on where how and what to use to catch steelhead on the SAC or Trinity!

Best two places I know of is around the Oregon inlet area or drive down to Hatteras point 👍

MM2 good luck there. If you decide to pier fish try Jennettes if it still there. Fished off it many times. 7223 Virginia Dare Trl Nags Head. 👍

TW Bait and Tackle has a free Facebook page anyone can assess. They tell you the bait, lures, times and locations.

If you can get to Hatteras Village to fish the sound and ocean or the in between, that’s where the fish are located.

If you fish the northern beaches early morning or late day between sand bars or in a drop off. A very light NE or East breeze over a sand bar, walk up and down the beach casting to maximize exposure. Look for sea life to cast into…

I would keep your expectations low for the northern beaches. Fish for an hour or two at day break or sunset each day and do other activities of fun.

Get a fishing license, enforcement is active.

Have the license. Fishing north shore today tomorrow and will head to Village on Thursday. Been going to TWs great people place. Not on FB. Sorry but it’s just not my means of socializing. Just learning the ropes of surf casting. I am strictly a fly fisher inland so it’s just a bit different but I love just being in the wind and surf even if I don’t catch anything. Also where I am from humidity is typically ten percent or less so I am rehydrating by osmosis!

We have been coming here almost yearly for over 30 years. Used to get a guide boat for 3-4 for the day for $300 plus could afford a generous tip with the guide we always used. First it was just me and my sons. Then them and friends then them and their spouses. Now it’s a $1000 plus tip just for three and way beyond what I can afford given how much it now costs to stay here. So yes things have changed and it’s now for those who have much higher incomes. The locals really haven’t. They have always been great and helpful despite it being hard if you’re not as wealthy as the visitors.

MM2 I wa reading about Jennettes pier. They have all kinds of rules n do's n don't s. All the small motels gone. The locals was always friendly. I remember when I could walk the beach for a couple miles n only seen couple people. Last time down there we came home with a busted up front-end. A woman decided to make a right turn in front of me. $3,500 in damage. She was un straight through left turn lane. It's definitely for the rich. 👍

I just went to jennettes pier. First off not one bite i stayed 6 hrs.
2nd people there are unbelievably rude as heck. I was all the way to the end and these two people had like 6 rods on one side and the other side they had that locked down when i got there i had brought my cart close to me the dude said your cart needs to be behind the line. Well im disabled and i was just trying to set up quickly so i wouldnt have to walk back and forth. Well the guy there on his golf cart was pretty rude. Then they saw some fish feeding right under me and what do you know they were all over top of me i had to reel my stuff in. They are lucky i was nice about it cause if it were a long time ago ii wouldnt have been so nice

Hi Gator. Always some that act like jackazzes brother. They think they own everything. One day they'll push the wrong button. I think most of piers have those that think they have exclusive rights. Last time I was there some guy n his kid got within inches of me. I had two rods n I was catching spot. Most people was. Instead ot the kid cast straight out or dropping the line he'd throw across mine. His dad saw it n nothing. Next thing the kid is holding his rod over top both of mine. I got a bite n came up with my rod. The kid n his dad just looked at me. I shook my head n they moved. Like the first day of trout season. 👍🎣

What an awful experience and I am so sorry it happened to you Grizz. Things have changed a great deal over the years. Most everyone are down to earth and not at all wealthy. Many of the people there are vacationers and not the locals. Although some locals are nasty to visitors which is upsetting to the rest of us. Finding a place to stay is tough and has unfortunately become very pricey.

Oh Gator, I hated hearing this and apologize for this rude behavior. In addition I am sorry the fishing was slow. Then once it picked up they crowded you like that, it is just wrong. I always give people plenty of room and never encroach them no matter how good the fish biting gets for anyone. Not everyone are jerks on the Outer Banks. If I use a pier most of the time I get a spot close to the shore just beyond the breaking waves. I have better luck there and that is why I usually surf cast. If you ever come back I sure hope you have a much better experience.

That’s is terrible to hear, but, when the fish stack up, so, do the fishermen and so do crossed lines.

The best time to fish is the last week in October and the first 2 weeks of November when occupancy is at its lowest. Somehow, the fish know the OBX population swells to 100% occupancy during Thanks Giving week, the fish spook and they take off for safety during that week.

Maybe, Hurricane Ian or another storm can create a new inlet or the start of one. Right after a storm, if you can find a new deep hole in the surf, you will find fish and no people to bother you.
