I have made 2 trips already to the Salmon River within the last 3 weeks. Very disappointed in the water levels.

Might have to wait until October!

The drought has taken it's toll on a lot of rivers Chris. The fall rains will be coming.

Thank you. If I get back again, I will give it a try. Are there Salmon there?

Hi Fred,

I agree, the levels have been low for quite some time now. Lets hope for some rainfall, absolutely 👍

Hi Jim,

Glad to hear. Yes, there are Atlantic Salmon, Rainbow Trout, and Brown Trout.

Jim, if you look at the map, you'll see it runs down to East Haddam where it merges into the Connecticut river. Two pretty nice floating docks there to launch and retrieve boats. If you have a very shallow draft boat, or a canoe or yak, you can navigate back North into the Salmon River up to Moodus, Johnsonville area (during high tide). Of course, if your not careful, you'll be upstream for quite some time. Guess how I know. Launch is not overly crowded, and a "quick" trip down to Saybrook and the Sound from there. Strong tidal influence there, in the CT. , and if you like Pike fishing, ( not too popular on The Stage ) there are some big guys to be found in the area on both sides of the river.

Chris.... I've lived in Colchester for 15 years, and this is lowest I've seen in that time. I go by a couple of times a week or more on rte 16, and hope the trout got away south of there. The holes from there up stream are not deep enough to sustain them, I don't think. D E E P will come to the rescue when it's time. That River gets some serious stocking. I was raised in Meriden, and hardly ever missed an opening day there, until I got older and grouchy, and never did opening days again. Great tradition though, drop me a PM next year and I'll see ya at our Fisherman's breakfast in Marlboro if your interested. Right on rte.66.

I see stocking listed for Farmington river 9/16. Worth a trip there this Friday?

C S , The Farmington is rated by many as the finest trout fishery in the state. I'm not a big trout angler, but I've done well there in the past, and it's a beautiful river, so what's the downside, except for a commute from home? Go for it , weather forecast is calling for a gorgeous early autumn day. We would welcome a report following your trip.
