The Gill Lice in rainbow trout in Jackson meadow Lake Nevada County Ca would make you sick. I contacted fish and game they responded with a ho hum response they weren't concerned at all, when I see what other states do when they here of this problem they want pictures of the fish where they were caught and so on, not in Ca. This lake is the head water of many lakes Milton Lake Bowman Lake Fuller Lake and many other lakes. I am 81 years old have been fishing Jackson meadow Lake and all the lakes in the Siearra's all my life I have never seen anything like this. I have a small voice it will take people contacting F&G or some group with a loud voice to get their attention, please contact Mitch Lockhart Ca F&G. Thanks Moose41

Typical California fishing license highest in the country and the lowest response from fish and game

What exactly do you expect them to do? Its not possible to treat an entire lake for parasites, way too much chemical required, even if epa would let them do it. Its a shame that the fish are infected, but there is not much you can do about it.

Jackson lake would not be the first lake in California to be treated with chemicals. Why is it that just the rainbow trout are infected the browns are ok could it be they were introduced from a hatchery?

Rainbows may be more vulnerable to that particular parasite. Call up the local fish biologist (or head of the state trout program, and ask them if you csn drop ny their office for a visit or ask them to come to your TU or fishing club meeting. Most will be more than glad to meet with you. BTW , dont project a lot of negative attitude whem you first contact them, they are human too.

on your previous reply you asked me what I expected F&G too do I expect them to react like other states. these fish have sores all down their sides with worms infested in them. This is my last post on this subject I don't have the energy, or the time left to fight this, I hope someone will take up the issue. I might go to the lake and catch one and post a picture you or any sportsman will be sick to their stomach. signing off moose41

Are the rainbows in that lake pellet eaters? Maybe it’s a stock farm problem.

I don't know my guess it is a hatchery problem.

The parasite is almost certainly Salmincola californiensis if you care to look into it.
Doesn’t infect brook trout.

southwestern virgina gill lice found in brook trout. I am not concerned about Virginas problem but it shows it can transfer to other species. What I care about is getting CA fish&game to due something about the problem in Jackson Meadow Reservoir before it infects other lakes down stream.

More than likely the worms will die over the winter. Let nature take its course.

The Gill Lice in rainbow trout in Jackson meadow L... (show quote)

DFG reported there was a major infection in several trout hatcheries last year. This was noted after many N. Cal lakes were stocked. Because of this many N.Cal weren't not stocked this year and will not be stocked until Spring of 2023. Gill lice and infections are common throughout the Cal system. Low water and high Temps are a major factor. There's no easy solution to this problem. Several years ago DFG used chemicals in Davis Lake. A premier trout hatchery to kill off invasive species. This resulted in a major lawsuit from the city of Davis and local vendors. DFG lost and suffered a major payout. So you won't see any chemicals in any lakes soon.
