First time fishing the south pier. Sept 7 10am outgoing tide with slight breeze. Lots of bites suspected panfish.
One good hit using 5 inch gulp . Saw a few small unknown caught by another person.
Got skunked but enjoyed the time there . Planning to try agai

Start using 1/2 ounce chrome spoons, some spanish mackerel are starting to move in. Don't waste your money on shrimp
Thanx. I’m new to area and just started to check out spots to fish.
I appreciate your expertise.
Try one of these.....left spoon is chrome metal, you can get them a Walmart....right spoon is aluminum that I make myself and paint white. I use them both but the white aluminum spoon is deadly if you use it properly. I don't usually go to the pier 'til late Sept. Then hit it 3-4 times a week before the water cools an the macks move on
I’ll get one and maybe fish this week sometime. I’ll post my adventure. Thanx again

Good luck FF. Some good tips you got there
I’ve only fished the south pier a couple times. First time I only caught a couple small Jacks. The last time I went I caught a bunch of small fish, Pinfish, Mangrove Snapper, and Grunts. Twice I put a Pinfish on as bait and something took off with it, but when I started reeling it in, whatever it was spit the hook both times. I’d like to try it at night sometime to see if anything bites. I would think that fish would be attracted to the street lights that run the length of the piers.
Good luck and tight lines.
The one that you made looks as good as any that you’d find in a store. Great job on that Sinker.
I’m really new to Florida fishing and I guess success depends a lot on the tides and maybe moon phases?
Looking on line there are so many places to fish I don’t think I’ll never run out of places to try but skyway is so convenient because you can drive to a spot to fish and not have to walk and carry
I saw a YouTube about fishing blind pass. Have you ever tried there?
Great responses on this post. Though I live on the pond at the opposite end of the country, This is the kind of info that helps all of us learn. Thanks.
I’m not familiar with blind pass.

Most likely Dolphins took your pinfish, bad out there now. I have given up on free lining for gags because they go back and forth over the rockpiles stealing bait. They will grab a bait and never touch the hook, when you put pressure on them the bait will pull and they have their snack. They will also steal your fish before you can get it out of the water, and so will the goliath grouper that live there. I use artificials now but they will still steal my fish

I have fished the ends of all the bridges in that area at night for snook, but not the beaches. If you go all the way down to Pass-A-Grille you can fish the jetty with swimbaits....lots of fish there at times, usually crowded. Take a look on google earth to see everything there

There are two areas named blind pass, one in St. Pete, and one in Englewood which has better snook fishing.....have never fished in Englewood
I fished the Skyway South most days 1-9 of September. Wind blew from North most days. In the past I’ve caught Spanish mackerel there from like at least May - November. This year no sign of them. Puzzling. I didn’t see many fish caught at all. One morning I caught about 9 blue runners and a couple of lizard fish.
I’ve used those same lures. They work well. I’ve also used gold and silver sidewinders with great results.
I’ll get a couple of the silver lures and spray paint white and try them out.
