Purchased a summer place near Amboy in SW Washington a couple of weeks ago and really looking forward to learning the area for trout, steelies, and salmon.
Been scouting around since our arrival here; Lewis River, Merwin Reservoir, Merrill Lake (really impressed with Merrill Lake!).
Love swinging flies for steelhead, floating lakes and rivers in my kayak, and wade fishing.
Beautiful area here in Washington! Loving it!

Welcome to the stage, Coloman. I know exactly where you are in Amboy. I have a sister and brother-in-law that have a place on the Lewis. They’re on Hayes Rd. The salmon and Steelies just aren’t what they use to be so now I concentrate on Kokanee at Merwin and usually do pretty well. So good luck and enjoy the wonderful PNW… 🐟on

Thanks!
I’ve been learning the trolling game on Merwin the past week, in my kayak. Its been slow. I’ve been told to get on the water at daybreak to improve my chances.

It’s my experience that there’s a off and on bite all day long. I would catch fish at day break and then they would lip lock for awhile till about 8:00 or 9:00 and then shut off again till about 11:00. Then I’ve usually got my limit by then. I launch out of Speelyai and turn west and fish the north side about 100’ off the shore trolling down as far as the waterfall then turn around and do the same coming back. There’s a rock point about half way down that I also concentrate at. I fish at 50’ and troll between 1.0 and 1.15 mph. Good luck… 🐟on

Well hopefully you’ll be posting pictures of your limit’s. But unfortunately they’re going to start slowing down because of the spawn. But they’ll be there next year and you can hit them hard in the spring. Perhaps we can meet up sometime at Merwin. I’d be more than happy to share my tips and techniques. Good luck… 🐟on

Well my season is done for the year at Merwin. I actually live up north, west of Tacoma. But I get down to Woodland 4 or 5 times during the spring and summer visiting family and of course I fish every time I’m there. So yeah, I’m a daily regular here on the stage so let me know when you get back in May and we’ll work something out. See ya then… 🐟on
