I have a pal that just moved to a se Houston suburbs. His place is on a lake that connects to Trinity Bay. Yesterday he texted and said there's big fish clearing the water by 1-2 ft. He ask if might know what they are. He didn't send any pics but knows they are not carp or cats. I think they may be mullet bc I've seen similar behavior while living on the St John River.
If any coastal stagers have any ideas I can pass on to him, with methods of catching, I'd like to hear them. TIA & tight lines
I live on a brackish bay. Sounds like mullet. They don’t bite hooks so he will have to catch in gill net (be sure it is legal) or cast net.
I know in LA they are considered trash fish, but we eat and love them in South AL. I think it depends on the type of bottom they feed on as to being good to eat. Nothing better than frying them up on my pier an hour after they were caught in a cast net.
The water is cleaner East of the Mississippi River so the mullet can be eaten there. Here in Texas they are bait, nothing more. Gill nets are illegal, so you have to catch them with a cast net. The live fingerlings are great for trout and the larger mullet can be used as cut bait for redfish. You need an aerator to keep them alive, it’s hard to keep them alive in a floating bait bucket.
