What caused that? Just old age?

It was hollow and diseased and all the weight was on one side, I knew it would fall in a safe spot

That's about it Gordon, at least around here. Fire pits are popular here, even though there's a no fire ordinance

Sorry to hear. Glad no one was hurt. Have a maple that I'm afraid is going to split at the "crotch" and come down on my neighbors BMW. It's partially on his property and I've asked if he wants to go in cutting it down but he doesn't seem concerned. I am but not paying over $2,000 to have it taken down. Looking into having a "band" wrapped around so it can't split.

That would have to be a really stout band; you might consider a chain with a chain binder. Sounds like a pretty big tree.

Yes it is. One branch broke and fell in his yard already, I had one taken down that would have crashed my house. The band needs to be done by some sort of accredited tree expert so I'll look into it. Probably not cheap. With the $25k payments for bone grafts, etc I can.t swing it now.

In this area if your tree falls on your neighbors property it's his problem

Have half of it cut down leaving it cut just above the crotch let the neighbor worry about the rest. Wouldn't be right but you might have to save up to get the other half done unless he wants to help.
