Would appreciate it if one of the members from the upper mid-west would let me know the best way to cook/grill them. Straight on the grill they burst and flame up. Only national brand around here is Johnsonville and I get the ones labeled Beer Bratwursts. Thanks.

J'ville are good brats. If not precooked, I parboil them in beer before putting on the grill. Sometimes they do split and flare up but I guess I never worried about it.

Don’t know about best but here in Milwaukee there is a method of pre-cooking (boil) in beer with sliced onion. Then put them on the grill to finish them. Add a little kraut and you’re good to go.

Boil in beer 8-10 minutes and then brown on grill!

brown on grill and boil in beer until liquid turns milky. Brown on the cooler area of grill, NOT on the hottest part !

Johnsonville are good. I'm going along with boil them in beer and onions first. When grilling them avoid the larger flames or the skin burns. Rotate them to cook through evenly.

Good call Scudrnr, boil them in beer and onions and brown them to your liking on the grill. Low and slow does the trick.
Sauerkraut is a nice touch along with spicy brown mustard. Yum!

Major, here's how I do brats: poke brats all over with a fork and place in cast iron skillet with quartered onions and pour enough Guinness stout till a little over halfway up the sides of the brats. One and a half cans should do it (you know what to do with the remaining half) Put cast iron skillet on the grill at around 400° and cover. Check every 5-10 min. to toss around brats and onions. Should be done in about 40-45 min. The Guinness imparts a malted barley caramelization to both the brats and onions that plain ol' beer doesn't and it tastes out of this world! Serve with kraut of course!.🍻
