Hi, am just getting started teaching my 10 year old how to spin, and am hoping to take him out in next day or so for his first session on the water (he's hooked plenty of grass in the local park, learning!). Wondering if people could recommend good local spots/times/lures for him to get a feel for the sport - and hopefully have a good first experience. Thanks in advance, and great this forum exists.
Welcome to the stage! I am not familiar with the area, but I would recommend starting him out with weedless lures such as a frog type of lure so he can see it on the surface, or a Johnson’s Silver minnow for distance, or even a Texas rigged worm with a wide gap worm hook. A bag of senko type worms and a few weedless, wacky hooks can get him all kinds of action and help with his patience, too. Those should be fished slowly. These can still get lost, but it is all part of the learning process. Good luck!

Livinsgton Manor NY, not far from you has a fly fishing museum and guys fish all over there. Great spot. Good luck!
Great advice. I'm probably going to take him to the Ashokan and give him some practice casting and getting used to moving the frog across the surface

Just remember to tell him to work it slowly with just little twitches and pops. Then let it sit still for several seconds.
Try NOT to set the hook when you have a blowup. Wait till you feel the weight of the fish pullin on the line. That's the hardest part of Frog fishin.
Good luck, post pics and welcome.
