Wish I had caught this one, or maybe I’m glad I didn’t! It took 3 & 1/2 hours to bring in! Just under 500 lbs

That definitely is a rare one. Average weight of today’s swords is 80-100lbs!

That's a beast for sure BD. I don't know if I would want to be on the rod for that one, even in a chair. Thanks for posting it.

Big Dog:

Come on down to south Florida we can hook you up and maybe even get a bigger one:-)
Lot’s of late nights fighting the swords and now with daytime fishing they run a bit smaller but more meat than anyone family can eat..

Mistred64:

We are blessed in south florida with this type of fishery. From Cuba all the way up our coast you can catch swordfish. I have many a friends who worked many a night on long line boats setting out 1600 hooks back before they shut down the industry due to over fishing. Here now after 20 years of no more long-liners we have a very productive swordfish recreational fishery. There has been many threats to reopen to buoy and possible long-liners to cull our fish. We can almost catch swords everyday if weather permitted. There is a method to it that takes a lot of practice and patience to catch them out in the gulf stream. The average size is around 250 to 400 lbs with some real old time numbers coming back in the 600 to 800 lbs sizes. The Gladiator is a great specimen to catch but keep in mind the mercury levels get real high in the bigger fish. So we prefer the smaller ones in the 175 to 250 range.

That's cool. I'm glad you're having that fun. For some reason I thought they were all in the Pacific and not in the Atlantic/Caribbean.
