I'm a saltwater guy, usually fish off the rocks in remote locations, and I primarily use spinning rigs and I despise braid. With the strong ocean currents and waves, along with rocks and seaweed, it always finds a way to get into a massive tangle. Also when my hands are freezing cold and it's windy, braid is much harder to tie knots with.
On the other hand, when fishing offshore I use braid on overhand setups, for livebaiting and fighting big yellowtail kingfish etc.
What are your thoughts on mono vs braid?

There's a situation for everything. I love mono, fluoro, various combinations of both, and braid. I wouldn't recommend just one kind for everything though.
My go to rod has p line copolymer on it. My light baitcaster has the same but lighter.
My ultralight has 4 lb fluoro
My catfish poles have 30 pound braid. About a hundred yards of nice coated braid and then a hundred or more of the cheaper stuff.

I always use braid for saltwater from the shore. 30-50 lb depending on the setup. Ive found that on crappy spinning reels braid has issues, so on my cheap freshwater setups I use mono or flouro.
What reel do you use from the shore and what test line are you using?

I use braid on my catfishing poles and I have one Abu Garcia pro max with braid I use for bass fishing. Mostly use that one for rough water with debris. My other 2 poles I use for bass have mono, because theyre baitcasters and thats all i need for them. I do all freshwater fishing so I use what is necessary and mono is good enough for what i need it for. If I was doing saltwater, then Id definitely look at either braided or Flouro. For me it just depends on the situation I am fishing in.
edit: have you tried a palomar knot with the braided? not a hard knot to do and works great with braided.

For land based casting like that I always use braid. Your casting distance will be greater and you can fit more line on your spool for when you hook into something big and it takes some runs. I’m a big believer in a Flourocarbon leader though and the knots to tie those can be a pain to learn (100%worth it though). I usually have a 2m flouro leader tied with an FG knot to my mainline.

I troll & the braid is great for that. It does not twist up under a load& wrap its self around my pole tip. Mono is old school. THE ricky sitka
